Huawei MateBook Pro S Goes Lighter, but HarmonyOS Carries the Real Weight

That sequence matters because online discussion initially mixed confirmed information with leaks. Reports circulated about the processor, memory configurations, display treatments, and colors before Huawei completed its launch.

The confirmed product direction is clearer than every individual configuration. The MateBook Pro S is an ultra-light HarmonyOS notebook designed around Huawei’s own hardware and software stack. It follows the first consumer HarmonyOS PCs introduced in 2025.

At 798 grams, the new machine is 172 grams lighter than the earlier MateBook Pro, which Huawei listed at 970 grams. That reduction equals almost 18 percent of the earlier laptop’s total weight.

It also places the machine well below Apple’s current 13-inch MacBook Air, which weighs 1.23 kilograms. Apple presents that model as a thin, highly portable mainstream laptop, not an experimental lightweight.

The official page also displays a different entry point from the launch claim circulating through the hot list. That mismatch does not invalidate the August 5 event. It does mean readers should verify the exact model, processor, and configuration before ordering.

For international readers, another limitation is equally important. Huawei presented this as a China-focused HarmonyOS computer. The company has not established comparable international availability or a global software proposition for the model.

The MateBook Pro S therefore starts as a domestic platform product. Its 798-gram body can attract attention worldwide, but the practical buying story remains tied to China.

That position deserves a cautious reading. Vertical integration gives Huawei more authority over product decisions, but control alone does not ensure that those decisions produce better results.

The immediate advantage is coordination. Huawei can design power management, device discovery, file transfer, input methods, local search, and AI services around hardware it also controls.

The company says HarmonyOS computers can continue meetings across devices, share files with multiple nearby users, locate compatible hardware while offline, and use a phone or tablet as part of a wider workspace. Some functions require specific HarmonyOS versions, compatible devices, a shared account, and enabled wireless connections.

Huawei also integrates Xiaoyi, its AI assistant, into the computer experience. The company says Xiaoyi can classify files, summarize documents, generate meeting notes, search local material, and assist with research.

Apple’s current M5 MacBook Air demonstrates why that integration is difficult to challenge. Its attraction does not rest on one specification. Buyers also inherit years of software compatibility, accessory support, developer attention, service integration, and predictable updates.

Huawei can now compete more directly on the shape of the experience. Its laptops can hand work to Huawei phones, move files between devices, and expose system features that do not depend on Microsoft’s priorities.

The MateBook Pro S even holds an obvious physical advantage. Carrying 432 fewer grams than a 13-inch MacBook Air is meaningful for commuters, frequent travelers, field researchers, and anyone already carrying chargers or tablets.

Huawei cannot claim that level of reach for HarmonyOS PCs. The MateBook Pro S is chiefly a Chinese-market product, and its software strengths are closely connected to Huawei’s domestic device and service environment.

That does not make the comparison irrelevant outside China. It reveals two different stages of the same platform strategy.

Apple is optimizing a mature computer platform and extending it with on-device AI. Huawei is building a younger computer platform while simultaneously developing processors, native applications, AI services, and new device categories.

The difference also changes how buyers should interpret performance. Apple Silicon has been tested across several generations, operating systems, and professional workloads. The Kirin XE90 needs independent benchmarks covering sustained performance, thermals, power use, graphics, and application behavior.

Huawei’s weight reduction could impose tradeoffs in those areas. A smaller thermal envelope can limit sustained processor output. A lighter chassis may leave less room for ports, speakers, cooling hardware, or structural reinforcement.

None of those outcomes should be assumed before testing. They are the practical questions created by the design.

Huawei’s updated MateBook Pro page describes a related 970-gram model with a 14.2-inch OLED display, 120 Hz refresh rate, a 70 Wh battery, and up to 40 W of sustained thermal design power. Those specifications establish what Huawei can package in a slightly heavier chassis.

The MateBook Pro S must show how much of that experience survives a further 172-gram reduction. Buyers need measurements, not family resemblance.

Apple therefore supplies the clearest standard. It shows that vertical integration creates durable value only when hardware efficiency, application availability, accessories, support, and long-term software maintenance advance together.

Real workloads last longer. Developers compile projects, analysts process large spreadsheets, creators export video, and researchers keep dozens of browser tabs open during calls.

The display may introduce additional configuration complexity. Prelaunch reports referenced standard, privacy-focused, and anti-glare treatments. Those surfaces can differ in clarity, brightness, color behavior, and viewing angles.

Buyers should confirm which display accompanies each configuration. A model optimized for privacy may not suit collaborative design work, while a matte treatment may appeal to people working near windows.

The launch claim therefore needs a practical translation. Huawei has designed a notebook that is remarkably easy to lift. Independent reviewers must now determine how easy it is to live with.

HarmonyOS Software Is the Harder Test

The largest uncertainty is whether HarmonyOS offers the applications and peripheral reliability required by demanding computer users.

Hardware attracts attention at launch, but application support determines whether a new operating system becomes a daily workspace. This pattern has defeated technically interesting PC platforms before.

Huawei says the HarmonyOS computer ecosystem has expanded rapidly since its 2025 debut. In the July interview, Zhu cited more than 19,000 integrated applications, over 1,700 general peripherals, and more than 1,600 professional peripherals.

Those totals represent progress, but raw counts reveal little about depth. A calculator, a banking application, and a professional video editor each count as one application while serving completely different needs.

The useful question is whether a buyer’s exact workflow works. That assessment starts with the applications used every week, followed by plugins, fonts, drivers, file formats, security tools, and collaboration services.

A writer may need only a browser, messaging, office software, and reliable cloud storage. That relatively simple workflow gives the MateBook Pro S a realistic path to adoption.

A software developer faces a longer checklist. Development tools must support the required languages, package managers, containers, virtual environments, debuggers, databases, deployment systems, and authentication methods.

A designer needs compatible creative applications, color management, fonts, drawing tablets, storage systems, and predictable export formats. A financial analyst may depend on specialized spreadsheet extensions or company security software.

Enterprise deployments add identity management, endpoint controls, device inventory, encryption policies, remote support, and compliance reporting. A platform can have thousands of applications and still miss one mandatory component.

Peripheral numbers require the same scrutiny. Compatibility should mean more than basic connection. Printers need complete drivers, displays need correct scaling, docks need stable charging, and audio hardware needs dependable input selection.

Huawei’s first-party accessories have an advantage because the company controls both sides of the connection. NearLink, Huawei’s short-range wireless technology, can support compatible mice, keyboards, styluses, and device-finding features.

That advantage becomes a limitation when users rely on equipment outside the Huawei catalog. The MateBook Pro S needs consistent behavior with third-party monitors, docks, storage drives, conferencing systems, and security keys.

Accuracy matters as much as privacy. Meeting summaries can omit decisions, misidentify speakers, or convert uncertainty into a confident statement. Research tools can cite weak material or generate an unsupported conclusion.

Huawei properly warns that AI-generated content is for reference. Buyers should treat these features as assistants requiring review, not as autonomous records.

Industry analysis supports the strategic logic while acknowledging the challenge. Canalys described Huawei’s 2025 HarmonyOS PC launch as a move toward platform autonomy under global technology restrictions.

Its platform autonomy analysis also emphasized the need to accelerate cooperation with major software partners. That remains the central task one year later.

The MateBook Pro S does not solve the application problem simply by being attractive or light. It gives Huawei another desirable device that can persuade developers the audience is worth serving.

That creates a circular challenge. Users wait for applications, while developers wait for users. Huawei must use its domestic customer base, device portfolio, and developer resources to break that loop.

Three Signals Will Decide What Happens Next

The next phase should be judged through independent testing, software depth, and evidence of repeat use rather than launch-day attention.

The first signal is a complete set of independent MateBook Pro S reviews. These should test the retail Kirin XE90 configuration, not a related MateBook Pro or preproduction machine.

Reviewers should measure sustained CPU and graphics performance, battery life, display quality, charging behavior, fan noise, surface temperature, wireless stability, and sleep reliability.

They should also test the 798-gram chassis through ordinary travel. Hinge movement, keyboard rigidity, port wear, and resistance to pressure matter more after several weeks than during a short demonstration.

Strong results would support Huawei’s claim that extreme weight reduction can coexist with dependable performance. Significant throttling, short battery life, or structural weakness would weaken the launch story.

The second signal is the quality of HarmonyOS application support over the next three months. Application totals should be replaced by specific workflow evidence.

Huawei should identify which professional applications run natively, which rely on web versions, and which remain unavailable. It should also explain the distribution and compatibility model clearly enough for technical teams to evaluate.

Updates from major Chinese software developers will be especially important. Native creative, engineering, financial, development, and enterprise applications would make the platform more credible than another wave of lightweight consumer utilities.

Progress in these areas would strengthen the case for HarmonyOS as a serious PC platform. Slow delivery or vague compatibility claims would leave the MateBook Pro S dependent on a narrow set of use cases.

The third signal is sustained user behavior. Shipment numbers can show distribution, but repeat usage reveals whether buyers treat a device as their primary computer.

Huawei has said HarmonyOS PC usage time reached parity with its earlier x86 computers. That is a meaningful company claim, but the methodology and sample details have not been independently established.

Future evidence should separate activation, active devices, average usage, retention, and primary-computer status. It should also distinguish consumer purchases from institutional deployments.

Huawei already had a meaningful position in China before launching HarmonyOS PCs. Canalys data reported by DigiTimes placed Huawei second in China’s PC market during the first quarter of 2025, with 4.3 million shipments and an 11 percent share.

That installed presence gives the company a route to users that most new operating systems lack. Huawei stores, phones, tablets, enterprise relationships, and cloud services can all support the transition.

It does not guarantee that customers will remain inside the new PC platform. People can admire the hardware while returning to Windows or macOS for missing software.

The huawei matebook story will become more important if users choose the MateBook Pro S for ordinary work after the launch period ends. It will become less important if the model functions mainly as a design showcase.

What remains unsettled is the exact retail presentation across Huawei’s overlapping MateBook pages, the performance of the Kirin XE90, and the depth of the supporting software environment.
