Moving from one demanding activity to another can feel surprisingly difficult. The previous problem may continue occupying your attention, while the next one requires a different mental frame. In this Huberman Lab AMA episode, Andrew Huberman examines why that transition is rarely instantaneous and how people might become more deliberate about managing it.
Huberman approaches task switching as a trainable coordination problem involving attention, cognition, perception, and time. His suggestions do not promise frictionless multitasking. Instead, they emphasize realistic transition periods, fewer distractions, simple perceptual exercises, and clearer priorities—all intended to help the brain leave one context before entering another.
The Purpose of the AMA Series

What Task Switching Actually Requires
Huberman defines task switching as the ability to redirect attention and adopt the mental operations appropriate for a different activity. That might mean moving from writing a report to joining a conversation, shifting from analytical work to exercise, or leaving a focused project to handle an administrative obligation.
Although these changes can look simple from the outside, each activity calls for a particular pattern of attention and behavior. The brain must reduce its engagement with processes associated with the previous task and recruit those needed for the next one. Huberman points to the prefrontal cortex as an important part of this coordination because it helps organize attention, thought, and behavior according to context.
This framing helps explain a familiar experience: physically opening a new document does not guarantee that the mind has arrived there. Part of your attention may still be rehearsing an earlier conversation or holding the structure of the project you just left. The switch has happened on the calendar, but not yet at the cognitive level.
Task Switching Is Not the Same as Cognitive Flexibility
Huberman distinguishes task switching from the broader concept of cognitive flexibility. Cognitive flexibility is the capacity to change how we think or which mental operation we apply. It can include reconsidering an assumption, adopting a new strategy, or interpreting a situation from another perspective.
Task switching depends on that flexibility, but it is more specific. It concerns moving attention between identifiable activities at particular times. A person may be capable of thinking flexibly and still struggle when asked to stop one demanding task and immediately begin another.
The distinction matters because it changes how the problem is addressed. Difficulty switching does not necessarily indicate a lack of intelligence, motivation, or creativity. It may reflect the cost of disengaging one set of neural processes and activating another. Huberman’s advice therefore focuses less on forcing a faster switch and more on creating conditions that allow the transition to occur.
Why Instant Transitions Are an Unrealistic Goal
One of the episode’s most practical ideas is that task switching takes time. Huberman cautions against expecting the brain to move cleanly between unrelated forms of work without an intermediate period.
The challenge is especially noticeable after deep concentration. Focused work requires sustained engagement with a narrow set of information, rules, and goals. When the session ends, those mental processes do not necessarily disappear on command. Starting another task immediately can produce a period in which the old context competes with the new one.
Recognizing that lag can reduce unhelpful self-judgment. Feeling mentally slow for a few minutes after an intense work block does not automatically mean that productivity has collapsed. It may simply be the transition itself. The more useful question is whether the schedule gives that transition enough room to complete.
Use Short Gaps to Protect the Transition
Huberman recommends introducing brief gaps between tasks rather than stacking activities with no separation. A transition gap does not need to become a lengthy break. Its purpose is to give attention somewhere neutral to go while the brain disengages from the previous activity.
A short walk, a quiet pause, or a few moments without new demands can create a clearer boundary. This is particularly valuable before entering a task that requires a substantially different mode of thinking.
The quality of the gap matters. Huberman warns that reaching for a smartphone immediately after finishing something can undermine the transition. A phone may introduce messages, headlines, images, and unrelated decisions at exactly the moment the brain is trying to release one context and prepare for another.
What appears to be a break can therefore become an additional task-switching burden. Instead of moving from task A to task B, the mind moves from task A through a dense stream of new material and only then attempts task B. A quieter interval may feel less stimulating, but it is more consistent with the purpose of the pause.
A Perceptual Exercise for Practicing Mental Shifts
Huberman proposes an exercise that combines changes in visual focus with attention to internal bodily sensations. The practice is based on the idea that perception, attention, and the brain’s experience of time are interconnected.
The exercise involves deliberately directing the eyes toward targets at different distances. For example, a person might focus first on something nearby, then on an object farther away, and then shift attention inward toward bodily sensations. The important feature is the intentional movement between distinct perceptual frames.
Huberman presents these shifts as a way to practice changing attentional states. Moving from near vision to far vision changes the spatial scale of attention. Redirecting awareness toward the body then changes the source of information being prioritized. Together, these transitions give the brain a structured opportunity to disengage and reorient.
This should not be treated as a medical intervention or an instant cure for brain fog. Within the episode’s scope, it is a practical training exercise: a controlled way to rehearse the act of leaving one attentional mode and entering another.
Visual Focus Can Influence the Experience of Time
The episode also connects task switching with what Huberman calls the time domain—how the brain perceives the passage of time. His argument is that visual attention at different distances can alter subjective time perception, which in turn may affect how a transition feels.
A narrowly focused visual state often accompanies concentrated activity. A broader or more distant gaze changes the perceptual context. By intentionally varying visual distance, a person may create a stronger sense that one period has ended and another is beginning.
This does not mean that looking across a room literally creates more time. The point is that our experience of duration is not entirely separate from attention and perception. A deliberate visual shift can function as a cue, helping distinguish the completed task from the one that follows.
That makes the exercise useful beyond formal practice sessions. Looking away from a close screen and allowing vision to settle at a greater distance could become part of a simple transition ritual. Combined with a pause and reduced incoming information, it may help establish a more noticeable boundary between work blocks.
Reduce the Number of Critical Daily Priorities
Huberman also recommends using a planned to-do list with no more than three genuinely critical tasks for the day. This does not mean that only three actions can be completed. Rather, it means identifying the few outcomes that deserve priority before distractions and competing demands accumulate.
A shorter critical list supports task switching in two ways. First, it reduces the number of major contexts competing for attention. Second, it makes the next destination clearer. When every item is labeled urgent, each transition carries an additional decision about where to go next.
Three priorities create a workable hierarchy. Smaller errands and maintenance tasks can still appear elsewhere, but they do not receive the same status. The distinction helps prevent a day from becoming a sequence of reactive switches driven by whichever notification or request arrives most recently.
The list is most useful when it guides transitions instead of merely recording obligations. Before leaving a task, you can identify which priority comes next and allow a brief gap before beginning it. That combines planning with the perceptual and attentional tools Huberman describes.
A Practical Task-Switching Routine
Taken together, Huberman’s ideas suggest a simple routine for moving between demanding activities:
Decide which two or three outcomes matter most before the day becomes reactive.
When a focused work period ends, avoid filling the next moment with phone content.
Allow a brief interval in which no new complex task is introduced.
Shift visual attention from a nearby target to something farther away.
Notice bodily sensations for a few moments before beginning the next activity.
Enter the new task with a clearly defined first action.
The routine is intentionally modest. Its value comes from making the transition explicit. Instead of treating switching as an invisible event that should happen instantly, it gives the brain time, perceptual cues, and a clear direction.
Huberman’s larger message is that better productivity does not always require squeezing more activity into every minute. In some cases, a small amount of unoccupied time between tasks may make the next period of work more effective. Mental clarity can depend not only on how well we focus, but also on how deliberately we stop focusing on what came before.
