AMD shares tanked roughly 10% after the company reported record quarterly revenue, stronger earnings, and an upbeat sales forecast. The sharp reversal left AMD Yahoo watchers asking why seemingly positive results triggered such an unforgiving response.

Those figures represented significant year-over-year growth. The company’s adjusted operating margin also reached 27%, compared with 12% during the same quarter of 2025.
The primary engine was the Data Center segment. Revenue there reached $6.7 billion, increasing 107% year over year as demand grew for EPYC server processors and Instinct accelerators.
Data Center products produced 58% of AMD’s total revenue. That concentration confirmed that the company’s financial story now depends heavily on cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence.
Client and Gaming revenue reached $3.8 billion, up 6% from the prior year. However, the two businesses moved in opposite directions.
Client revenue increased 23% to $3.1 billion, supported by Ryzen processor demand. Gaming revenue declined 31% to $779 million because of lower semi-custom chip sales.
Embedded revenue reached $977 million, rising 19% as industrial and edge-computing demand improved. That recovery helped broaden the quarter beyond AI infrastructure.
AMD’s earnings release also provided a better-than-expected revenue outlook. Management projected approximately $13 billion for the third quarter, with a range of $300 million in either direction.
The forecast represented expected growth of about 41% year over year and 13% sequentially. It suggested that AMD anticipated another record quarter.
CEO Lisa Su called the quarter excellent and highlighted accelerating EPYC demand, expanding Instinct deployments, and the beginning of the Helios ramp. Helios is AMD’s integrated rack-scale platform for deploying large clusters of AI accelerators.

AMD has made measurable progress. The company says major cloud providers and AI developers are deploying or evaluating its current and future platforms.
It has also announced large commitments from customers including Meta and Anthropic. The planned Anthropic deployment covers up to two gigawatts of MI450-series GPUs in Helios racks.
Commitments of that size help validate customer interest. They do not automatically establish deployment schedules, utilization rates, revenue recognition, or final profitability.
That gap between announced capacity and realized economics is central to understanding the stock reaction. Investors have heard an increasingly ambitious story, but they still need quarterly evidence.

If the percentage remains flat for several quarters, investors will ask whether competitive pricing and system costs impose a lasting ceiling. Revenue could still grow rapidly, but valuation assumptions would need adjustment.
