Anthropic IPO: Nvidia's $10 Billion Anchor Talks Deepen a Circular AI Bet

Anthropic is reportedly discussing a $10 billion Nvidia commitment to its IPO, potentially securing a major buyer before asking public investors to value it near $2 trillion.

The proposed Anthropic IPO would seek as much as $100 billion, according to two people familiar with the confidential talks. Nvidia would participate as an anchor investor, an institution that commits to purchase shares before the wider offering begins. The terms remain under discussion, and neither company has confirmed an agreement.

The unusual part is not simply the size. Nvidia already supplies much of the computing infrastructure behind Claude, while Anthropic has committed billions to Nvidia-powered cloud capacity. A fresh Nvidia Anthropic investment would therefore connect the IPO's credibility to the same hardware relationship that supports Anthropic's growth.

That structure gives both companies a reason to proceed. It also gives public investors a difficult question. Would Nvidia's participation validate Anthropic's commercial prospects, or mainly reinforce a mutually beneficial cycle of investment, chip demand, and cloud spending?

OpenAI faces pressure from the other side of that question. Anthropic filed confidential IPO paperwork first and has reported rapid growth in Claude and Claude Code. If Nvidia joins the offering, Anthropic gains both capital and a highly visible endorsement from the company supplying the AI industry's most sought-after processors.

The Anthropic IPO Talks Put Three Huge Numbers on the Table

The reported transaction would test whether public markets can absorb an AI offering on a scale previously reserved for entire industries.

According to the initial anchor investor talks, Anthropic wants to raise as much as $100 billion at a valuation near $2 trillion. Nvidia is considering a commitment of up to $10 billion. The sources cautioned that every figure remains subject to change.

The distinction between an investment discussion and a completed agreement matters. Anthropic declined to comment on the report. Nvidia did not immediately respond to the original request for comment. No public prospectus currently confirms the targeted valuation, offering size, or list of anchor investors.

Anthropic has taken a formal step toward the market. It said on June 1 that it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission. A confidential filing lets the regulator review draft disclosures before those documents become public.

That filing does not guarantee a listing. Anthropic said the offering remains dependent on market conditions and other factors. The company has not publicly decided how many shares it will sell or what price it will request.

The reported schedule adds urgency. Sources told Reuters that Anthropic expects to complete the listing before the November 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Political calendars do not formally control IPOs, but uncertainty around regulation, markets, and government policy can narrow an issuer's preferred window.

The numbers would still make this offering exceptional under almost any final structure. U.S. IPOs excluding blank-check companies raised $137 billion through August, according to Dealogic data cited in the report. Anthropic alone is discussing proceeds equal to nearly three quarters of that total.

A $100 billion raise would also represent only 5 percent of a $2 trillion valuation. That ratio suggests the company could sell a relatively limited ownership stake while still collecting immense capital. Existing investors would retain most of their exposure, while public shareholders would establish the first continuously traded market price.

For Nvidia, a $10 billion allocation would be large enough to attract attention without making it the controlling shareholder. The commitment would instead operate as a signal. It would tell other institutions that a central infrastructure supplier is willing to accept the proposed valuation and hold a material position.

Yet an anchor is not a guarantee against losses. Anchor investors generally receive an allocation before the broader marketing process, but their participation cannot establish the correct price. The market must still decide whether Anthropic's expected cash flows justify its valuation after trading begins.

That is why the Anthropic IPO is more than a fundraising story. It asks public investors to evaluate a business whose revenue is rising quickly, whose infrastructure requirements remain immense, and whose prospective anchor also benefits from its spending.

Why Nvidia Wants a Seat Before Public Trading Starts

Nvidia can support an important customer, protect future demand, and influence the hardware choices behind Claude through one strategic commitment.

Nvidia and Anthropic were not distant counterparties before these talks. In November 2025, Nvidia and Microsoft announced investments of up to $10 billion and $5 billion in Anthropic. The companies paired those commitments with a broader infrastructure and engineering partnership.

Anthropic agreed to purchase $30 billion of Microsoft Azure computing capacity under the strategic partnership. That capacity uses Nvidia systems. Anthropic also planned to contract up to one additional gigawatt of compute built around Nvidia's Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin architectures.

The relationship goes beyond a simple chip sale. Anthropic and Nvidia said their engineers would optimize Claude models for Nvidia systems. They would also adapt future Nvidia architectures to Anthropic workloads, targeting performance, efficiency, and total cost of ownership.

That collaboration gives Nvidia information about the demands created by frontier models. It can observe how Anthropic trains and serves Claude at a scale few customers reach. Those lessons can influence processor design, networking, memory, and software decisions across Nvidia's product roadmap.

Anthropic gains access to engineering support and scarce infrastructure. Nvidia gains a major customer committed to its architecture. An additional Nvidia Anthropic investment through the IPO would put capital behind an operating partnership that already directs spending toward Nvidia-based systems.

This is the core reversal. Nvidia would not merely evaluate Anthropic as an outside financial investor. It would invest in a customer whose expansion can produce more demand for Nvidia's own products.

That does not make the transaction improper. Strategic suppliers frequently invest in customers, especially when a market requires large upfront commitments. The arrangement can align roadmaps, reduce financing uncertainty, and accelerate capacity construction.

However, it changes how investors should interpret the endorsement. A financial institution generally earns returns when its shares appreciate. Nvidia can benefit from appreciation, but it can also benefit if Anthropic uses the proceeds to buy more Nvidia-powered compute.

The incentive is therefore broader than the stock position. Even if Anthropic later diversifies its hardware, the company needs vast capacity now. A faster capital raise can support data centers, cloud contracts, model development, and inference demand across the AI supply chain.

Nvidia also has a competitive reason to stay close. Major AI developers are increasingly experimenting with custom processors and alternative accelerators. These efforts aim to lower costs, secure capacity, and reduce dependence on a single chip supplier.

Anthropic has reportedly formed an internal custom-chip team. It is also spreading workloads across Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Broadcom, and other infrastructure partners. The company wants access to the best available compute without allowing one vendor to dictate its economics.

An IPO stake gives Nvidia another connection as that diversification unfolds. It does not stop Anthropic from using competing hardware. It does make Nvidia a shareholder, engineering partner, supplier, and potential anchor investor at the same time.

That combination is strategically valuable. It also makes the independence of each commercial decision harder for outsiders to assess.

Anthropic's Growth Case Depends on Compute at an Unusual Scale

The valuation argument rests on Claude's revenue growth, but sustaining that growth requires infrastructure commitments that resemble industrial expansion.

Anthropic reported a $47 billion annualized revenue run rate in May. Run rate is not audited annual revenue. It extrapolates a recent revenue period across one year and can rise or fall as customer demand changes.

By the end of July, that measure had reportedly exceeded $65 billion. The comparison with approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025 shows the velocity behind the IPO pitch. It does not establish that Anthropic has already collected $65 billion during 2026.

The company also completed a $65 billion Series H financing in May. Anthropic's funding announcement placed its post-money valuation at $965 billion, more than double the $380 billion valuation attached to its February round.

A $2 trillion IPO valuation would roughly double that May valuation within months. Public investors would therefore be asked to pay for continued expansion rather than a mature record of stable earnings.

The reported financial forecast extends that logic. Anthropic projects between $190 billion and $200 billion in 2028 revenue, according to people familiar with its financials. Bankers and investors are reportedly applying revenue multiples to that future figure.

Those revenue projections reach much further ahead than conventional valuation methods based on current earnings. They ask investors to underwrite customer adoption, model performance, pricing discipline, and available computing capacity at once.

Anthropic's second-quarter revenue was projected at no less than $10.9 billion, more than twice the previous quarter. The company also expected its first quarterly operating profit, at $559 million. These figures were reported by sources familiar with its finances, rather than through a public audited filing.

The confidential prospectus should eventually provide a clearer picture. Investors will need actual revenue, operating expenses, stock compensation, infrastructure commitments, customer concentration, and cash-flow data. A run rate alone cannot answer those questions.

Compute remains the largest operational requirement behind the growth story. Claude must be trained on large clusters and then served to customers whenever they send a request. Heavy usage therefore produces both revenue and continued infrastructure expense.

Anthropic has tried to secure supply through several competing systems. Amazon remains its primary cloud provider and training partner. Microsoft Azure provides Nvidia capacity, while Google and Broadcom are developing additional TPU capacity for the company.

In April, Anthropic signed an agreement for up to five gigawatts of Amazon capacity. The Amazon compute deal includes Trainium2 and Trainium3 processors, which compete with Nvidia accelerators for certain AI workloads.

Five gigawatts is closer to the power requirement of a major infrastructure network than a conventional software deployment. Anthropic needs that scale because Claude serves individuals, developers, and organizations while the company continues training new models.

The spending creates a tension inside the valuation. Software businesses often attract high multiples because an additional customer costs relatively little to serve. Frontier AI systems can carry substantial marginal inference costs, particularly when customers use long contexts or reasoning-heavy models.

Anthropic must prove that revenue can grow faster than those expenses. It must also show that model improvements do not demand ever-larger capital commitments merely to preserve competitive performance.

The company has real commercial evidence behind its argument. Claude Code has gained traction among developers, while enterprises use Claude for software development, research, analysis, and operational workflows. Anthropic says Claude is available across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.

However, public investors will distinguish product demand from durable economics. They will ask how much revenue comes from recurring enterprise contracts, how much depends on promotional usage, and how gross margins change as workloads become more complex.

That scrutiny makes the Nvidia anchor discussion important. The investment would help fund the next phase of capacity. It would not resolve whether that capacity produces returns appropriate for a $2 trillion company.

Nvidia's Endorsement Also Reveals Anthropic's Dependency

The same partnership that strengthens the offering exposes how closely Anthropic's expansion remains tied to outside infrastructure providers.

The Nvidia Anthropic investment can be read as supplier confidence. Nvidia understands AI infrastructure better than almost any potential investor, and it has direct knowledge of Anthropic's technical demands. Its participation would carry more operational context than a purely financial allocation.

It can also be read as customer financing. Anthropic raises capital, spends part of that capital on computing capacity, and helps generate demand for Nvidia systems. Nvidia then benefits through both its investment and its hardware business.

Similar relationships run throughout the frontier AI market. Amazon and Google have invested in Anthropic while supplying it with cloud infrastructure. Microsoft invests in major model developers while selling them computing capacity and distributing their models through its products.

These arrangements solve a practical problem. AI laboratories need more infrastructure than their current cash flows can comfortably finance. Cloud providers and chipmakers possess capital, capacity, and a financial interest in expanding demand.

The risk appears when headline revenue and investment totals begin reinforcing one another without enough transparency. A strategic investment does not automatically equal independent market validation. Cloud purchase commitments do not automatically equal efficient use of the capacity.

Public disclosures should clarify the direction of these cash flows. Investors need to know whether financing agreements include purchase commitments, preferred access, warrants, discounts, or other commercial provisions. They also need to know how those terms affect reported margins.

The Anthropic IPO explained through this lens is a test of dependency. Anthropic wants enough capital to compete at the frontier, but accepting strategic money can deepen its ties to the suppliers whose costs it hopes to control.

Hardware diversification is its main response. Anthropic uses Amazon Trainium processors, Google TPUs, Nvidia GPUs, and multiple cloud platforms. Each option gives the company negotiating leverage and reduces the operational risk of a single bottleneck.

Diversification introduces its own costs. Models and inference systems must be adapted for different chip architectures. Engineering teams must maintain software across multiple platforms. Workloads can behave differently depending on memory, networking, and compiler performance.

Custom silicon could provide greater control later. A processor designed around Claude's workloads might improve efficiency and reduce dependence on standard accelerators. Yet chip design takes time, expert staff, manufacturing access, and substantial capital before it produces usable systems.

Nvidia can therefore remain central even while Anthropic tries to become less dependent on it. Nvidia already offers mature hardware, networking, developer tools, and deployment support. Alternative systems must compete with that entire stack, not only with processor specifications.

The strategic tension is clear. Anthropic needs Nvidia enough to welcome its capital, while also needing alternatives to defend its future margins. Nvidia wants Anthropic's growth, while knowing that successful AI laboratories have strong reasons to design around Nvidia over time.

OpenAI confronts a related problem. It must secure capital and compute while competing for customers, developers, and public-market attention. Anthropic's earlier confidential filing and possible Nvidia anchor would force OpenAI to decide whether to accelerate its own listing or wait for clearer conditions.

Amazon and Google also face mixed incentives. Both support Anthropic financially and technically, yet both sell competing AI services. Microsoft distributes Claude while remaining closely connected to OpenAI. Every major participant is simultaneously a partner, supplier, investor, or competitor.

That network makes a simple company-versus-company narrative incomplete. The primary conflict sits between validation and dependency. Nvidia's participation would make the IPO easier to market, but it would also highlight how much Anthropic's business relies on infrastructure owned by strategic backers.

What a $2 Trillion Valuation Still Has to Prove

A record valuation requires more than rapid adoption because reported run rates, future forecasts, and strategic commitments do not replace audited economics.

Anthropic's growth is substantial by any reasonable measure. Its May financing valued the company at $965 billion, and the company said its revenue run rate had reached $47 billion. The reported July figure above $65 billion implies continued acceleration.

Still, a $2 trillion valuation would price in much of the expected success before public investors see a long operating history. It would value Anthropic above most listed companies while the economics of frontier model development remain unsettled.

The strongest bullish argument starts with product use. Claude has become a serious competitor in coding, knowledge work, and enterprise deployment. Revenue has expanded as companies move from experiments into repeatable workflows.

Anthropic has also reached customers through several distribution channels. Claude is available directly, through APIs, and across the largest cloud platforms. That reach lowers adoption barriers for companies with existing relationships at Amazon, Google, or Microsoft.

Investors backing the May round emphasized this enterprise momentum. They pointed to Claude's use in complex workflows and Anthropic's position among advanced model developers. Those investors had access to more private information than ordinary readers, although their comments remain advocacy from interested parties.

The skeptical case begins with the valuation's dependence on forecasts. Reaching $190 billion to $200 billion of revenue in 2028 requires continued growth despite stronger competition, falling model prices, and changing customer preferences.

OpenAI, Google, Meta, xAI, and specialized model providers can all pressure pricing. Open-source and open-weight systems give some customers alternatives they can operate themselves. Smaller models can also handle routine tasks at lower computational cost.

Anthropic must keep Claude differentiated enough to defend demand without allowing development and serving costs to overwhelm revenue. The company also must convert popularity into durable contracts rather than temporary usage linked to a particular model release.

Profitability deserves particular attention. The private funding context showed that Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX were still spending more than they earned earlier in 2026. A single projected operating profit does not establish a stable margin pattern.

The eventual prospectus should reveal whether infrastructure expenses rise proportionally with revenue. It should also separate contractual commitments from actual consumption and show how much future cash is already assigned to compute providers.

Customer concentration presents another question. A few large enterprises or cloud partners could generate substantial revenue quickly. That growth becomes less dependable if customers can renegotiate contracts, route work to other models, or build internal systems.

Regulatory exposure also belongs in the valuation discussion. Advanced AI companies face questions about safety, copyright, data governance, competition, and government procurement. Anthropic has promoted a safety-focused identity, but that position can create conflicts with customers or officials seeking fewer restrictions.

None of these risks disproves the growth story. They define the evidence required to justify its price. Investors need disclosures detailed enough to distinguish a fast-growing software platform from a capital-intensive infrastructure consumer.

Nvidia's participation would provide confidence that Anthropic can access hardware. It would not independently verify revenue quality, gross margins, customer retention, or future cash generation.

That boundary should shape coverage of the deal. The reported investment is meaningful because Nvidia understands the market and has immense resources. It remains a strategic decision by an interested supplier, not a neutral certificate of value.

Three Signals Will Decide Whether the Anthropic IPO Thesis Holds

The public prospectus, the final anchor terms, and Anthropic's compute economics will matter more than another headline valuation.

The first signal is the public registration statement. Anthropic's confidential filing gives regulators an early view, but prospective shareholders need the published document. It should disclose audited financial statements, material risks, infrastructure obligations, ownership, and the proposed use of proceeds.

Those details can strengthen the current thesis if revenue quality and margins support Anthropic's reported growth. They can weaken it if run-rate expansion relies on concentrated customers, unusually favorable accounting periods, or rapidly escalating compute costs.

The second signal is Nvidia's final commitment. Investors should watch whether Nvidia accepts the reported $10 billion allocation, chooses a smaller amount, or remains outside the completed offering. The price, lockup provisions, and relationship to existing agreements will also matter.

A full commitment on ordinary terms would reinforce the view that Nvidia sees long-term financial value beyond near-term chip sales. Special terms or a much smaller allocation would make the endorsement less comparable with demand from conventional institutional investors.

The third signal is Anthropic's infrastructure mix. Watch how much capacity comes from Nvidia systems, Amazon Trainium processors, Google TPUs, and any internal chip program. This mix will show whether Anthropic is gaining cost control or simply accumulating overlapping commitments.

More diversified capacity can reduce shortages and improve negotiating leverage. It can also increase engineering complexity. The best evidence will be improving margins alongside greater model usage, rather than gigawatt commitments alone.

These signals matter to more than prospective shareholders. Developers need to know whether Claude's infrastructure can support reliable access and predictable performance. Enterprise buyers need evidence that Anthropic can meet long-term commitments without becoming captive to one supplier.

Knowledge workers also have a practical stake. A public Anthropic would face stronger pressure to grow revenue, expand distribution, and report material risks. Those incentives can shape Claude's availability, product priorities, enterprise controls, and pace of model releases.

Teams tracking this market should preserve filings, partnership announcements, and financial updates in a consistent research system. Connecting those materials through knowledge blending makes it easier to separate confirmed disclosures from shifting reports.

The Anthropic IPO is currently a reported plan, not a completed transaction. Nvidia's participation would make the offering easier to sell and deepen a strategically important relationship. It would also place the circular economics of AI investment directly before public shareholders.

The next question is therefore not whether a $10 billion anchor sounds impressive. It is whether Anthropic's disclosures show that customer revenue can outgrow the infrastructure costs supported by that same investor.
