Apple Forecasts 15% iPhone Growth, but Supply Is Becoming the Constraint

Apple expects iPhone revenue to grow about 15% in its fiscal fourth quarter, despite supply restrictions that management says will intensify significantly. That forecast turns an encouraging demand story into a harder operational test.

The company is entering its September quarter with rising component costs, less flexibility in its supply chain, and several constrained product categories. Yet Apple still expects total revenue to increase between 9% and 11% from the previous year.

That tension matters more than the headline growth rate. Apple must convert strong iPhone demand into shipments while protecting margins from memory inflation and other supply pressures. Samsung and other hardware manufacturers face similar component conditions, but Apple's scale makes its response especially important for the wider consumer electronics market.

Apple Is Guiding for Another Quarter of Strong iPhone Growth

Apple's forecast says iPhone demand remains healthy, but its ability to supply that demand is becoming less certain.

Apple issued the outlook after reporting its fiscal third-quarter results on July 30, 2026. The quarter ended June 27 and produced records for company revenue, earnings per share, iPhone revenue, Mac revenue, and Services revenue.

According to Apple's quarterly results, revenue reached $109.4 billion, an increase of 16% from the previous year. Gross margin reached 50.1%, while diluted earnings per share increased 29% to $2.02.

Tariff refunds materially improved those results. Apple said the refunds added approximately two percentage points to gross margin and $0.11 to earnings per share.

The iPhone generated $54.25 billion in quarterly revenue, according to the company's reported category figures. That represented roughly half of Apple's total sales and set a June-quarter record.

Mac revenue reached $10.35 billion, while Services produced $30.74 billion. iPad revenue was $6.19 billion, and wearables, home products, and accessories generated $7.88 billion.

Apple also reported revenue growth across every geographic segment. Greater China contributed $18.8 billion, while the Americas remained the largest region with $45.78 billion.

Those results provide the foundation for management's fourth-quarter confidence. Apple expects iPhone revenue to grow in the mid-teens, which implies a rate near 15% from the same period last year.

The company also expects its total revenue to grow between 9% and 11%. That range suggests the iPhone will continue expanding faster than Apple's overall business.

This difference is important because iPhone sales influence several connected revenue streams. A larger active-device base can support Services, accessories, warranties, cloud storage, and application spending over time.

Apple said its installed base reached another record across every major product category and geographic segment. However, the company does not regularly publish a precise active-device total for each category.

The outlook therefore describes more than a successful phone cycle. It assumes Apple can keep supplying enough devices while several important inputs become more expensive and harder to secure.

Management's warning prevents investors from treating 15% growth as a simple demand forecast. It is also a forecast about manufacturing capacity, component allocation, product mix, and Apple's ability to manage shortages.

Apple gave investors more detail about the boundaries of that forecast. Gross margin should fall between 47% and 48%, including approximately one percentage point from tariff refunds.

Operating expenses should land between $19.1 billion and $19.4 billion. These figures show that Apple expects substantial revenue growth without maintaining the unusually high margin reported during the June quarter.

The projected margin decline is not automatically evidence of weaker business quality. The June quarter received an unusually large benefit from tariff refunds, making a direct sequential comparison misleading.

Even so, the guidance places component inflation at the center of Apple's next earnings test. Strong demand matters only when the company can manufacture, ship, and profitably sell the required devices.

Why 15% iPhone Growth Is a Supply-Chain Test

The central conflict is no longer whether consumers want iPhones, but whether Apple can deliver enough devices without surrendering too much profitability.

Apple expects supply constraints affecting the iPhone, Mac, and iPad to increase significantly from the June quarter. CEO Tim Cook attributed that progression partly to rising memory costs and reduced supply-chain flexibility.

Memory refers to the DRAM and storage components that allow devices to run applications and retain data. These components are fundamental inputs across smartphones, personal computers, servers, and other electronics.

That language now looks less like a general legal precaution and more like an active operating issue. Apple entered the June quarter with constraints and expects greater pressure during the September period.

Cook said Apple paid more for memory in the June quarter than in the March quarter. He also expects memory expenses to rise again during the September quarter.

Higher input costs create several possible responses. Apple can accept lower hardware margins, change its product mix, negotiate with suppliers, redesign future products, or adjust consumer pricing.

Each option carries a tradeoff. Absorbing costs protects demand but reduces profit per device. Raising prices protects unit economics but risks slowing purchases, especially in more price-sensitive markets.

Product mix offers a partial buffer. Greater sales of premium iPhone models can lift average revenue per device, even when component costs increase.

However, product mix cannot manufacture unavailable components. Supply limits can prevent Apple from selling the exact models that consumers want, leaving demand unfulfilled or redirecting purchases toward alternatives.

Apple's size normally provides purchasing leverage and early access to manufacturing capacity. It can make large commitments, coordinate closely with suppliers, and distribute devices across many markets.

Scale does not remove physical limitations. If production capacity is constrained, Apple must prioritize models, configurations, regions, and launch schedules within a finite supply.

Without that figure, outsiders cannot separate demand strength from shipment limits with complete precision. They can only compare guidance, actual category revenue, delivery times, and management's later explanations.

The Margin Forecast Reveals the Real Tradeoff

Apple expects strong growth and a lower margin percentage, showing how tariff benefits and component inflation are pulling results in opposite directions.

The June quarter's 50.1% gross margin set a demanding comparison. Apple said tariff refunds contributed approximately two percentage points, meaning the underlying result would have been lower without that benefit.

For the September quarter, management expects gross margin between 47% and 48%. The forecast includes about one percentage point from tariff refunds.

The changing benefit explains part of the expected decline. A smaller refund contribution removes temporary support before considering product mix, foreign exchange, and rising component expenses.

Tariff refunds are repayments of previously collected import duties. They can improve reported results during a particular period without permanently changing the economics of future production.

That distinction matters because investors often treat gross margin as an indicator of pricing strength and operating efficiency. A temporary refund can raise the figure even when underlying costs remain challenging.

The earnings coverage also noted that refunds added $0.11 per share to June-quarter earnings. Analysts had expected earnings of $1.89 per share, while Apple reported $2.02.

Removing the refund mechanically would not produce a complete underlying earnings calculation. Taxes, timing, and other accounting effects make that comparison more complicated.

The comparison should not be overstated. Apple also operates cloud services and AI infrastructure, while its competitors sell consumer hardware and software alongside data-center investments.

However, the financial pressure reaches Apple through a different channel. Other technology companies compete to secure computing resources, while Apple must protect the economics of products affected by that demand.

An analyst quoted by the Associated Press praised Apple's cash generation relative to heavily investing AI peers. The same analyst warned that rising memory expenses could challenge later quarters.

That balanced view captures the margin problem. Apple avoids some direct AI infrastructure spending, but it cannot avoid the component market shaped by that spending.

Strong Demand Does Not Guarantee 15% Revenue Growth

Apple's guidance depends on several assumptions that investors cannot fully verify until the quarter closes.

The most important uncertainty is the size of the supply constraint. Apple says the impact will increase significantly, but it has not provided a dollar estimate or unit range.

That omission is understandable because supplier output and customer demand can change during the quarter. It also limits the precision of any outside forecast.

Apple has delivered through previous shortages by adjusting production, transportation, and market allocation. Historical execution supports management's confidence but does not guarantee the current outcome.

The memory environment also differs from an isolated shortage affecting one device component. AI infrastructure demand can sustain investment and purchasing pressure across several quarters.

Apple itself acknowledges that forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainty. Its official release says actual results can differ materially because of supply, competition, regulation, geopolitics, and other conditions.

That legal language should not invalidate the forecast. It should remind readers that guidance is a management estimate built from information available at one point in time.

The most reasonable interpretation is neither automatic confidence nor immediate skepticism. Apple has demonstrated demand momentum, while its production and margin assumptions still require validation.

Apple’s iPhone Outlook Pressures Suppliers and Rivals

A successful quarter would confirm Apple's ability to claim scarce capacity, while a miss would expose the limits of even its enormous purchasing scale.

Apple's guidance has implications beyond its own income statement. Suppliers must support a large increase during a period of tightening availability and higher costs.

A projected iPhone growth rate near 15% gives component manufacturers a strong demand signal. It can influence production schedules, capacity allocation, inventory planning, and contract negotiations.

Three Signals Will Decide Whether Apple’s Forecast Holds

Failure on one condition would not automatically invalidate Apple's broader position. It would reveal which part of the operating model is carrying the greatest pressure.

For customers, the practical response is straightforward. Watch delivery windows and purchasing lead times before treating the 15% forecast as proof of easy availability.

For suppliers and competitors, Apple's next report will reveal how much leverage scale still provides in a constrained component market. It will also show whether higher costs are reaching consumers.

For investors, the margin bridge deserves as much attention as the iPhone growth rate. Temporary refunds can improve reported results, while memory inflation can weaken the underlying economics.

Apple has given the market a confident revenue target and an unusually direct supply warning. The next quarter will determine whether those statements can remain true together.

Will Apple secure enough components to deliver mid-teens iPhone growth without falling below its margin range? Track availability first, then compare the final revenue and margin figures with management's exact guidance. That sequence will separate genuine demand strength from favorable mix, temporary refunds, and unmet orders. It will also clarify whether Apple's supply-chain scale remains a decisive advantage during the current memory cycle. The headline forecast is attractive, but execution will decide its value.
