DJI launched the Osmo 360 II on August 13 and reportedly took the top first-day sales position within 24 hours. The company says its new 8K camera led relevant rankings on JD.com, Tmall, and Douyin. That is a strong opening for DJI, but the result comes from a company-linked sales claim rather than independently audited market data.
The timing matters. Insta360 launched the X6 one day earlier, extending a product family that helped define the consumer 360-camera category. DJI is no longer entering an uncontested niche. It is asking buyers to choose between headline capture specifications and the mature editing experience that makes 360 footage useful.
That distinction turns a one-day ranking into a broader test. A 360 camera records nearly everything around it, but creators still must find a subject, reframe the scene, stabilize movement, and export a conventional video. DJI can win attention with 8K recording. It must also prove that owners can move from capture to a finished clip without unnecessary friction.
What DJI’s First-Day Ranking Actually Says
The reported sales lead establishes launch momentum, not lasting market leadership.
A sales bulletin published by 36Kr says the Osmo 360 II ranked first in all-channel launch-day sales after 24 hours. It also says the camera topped 360-camera lists on JD.com, Tmall, and Douyin.
Those platforms cover several distinct buying behaviors. JD.com is closely associated with electronics retail, Tmall hosts major brand storefronts, and Douyin blends short-form video with direct commerce. Leading across all three suggests DJI coordinated product awareness, demonstrations, and inventory around a concentrated launch window.
The result also shows the value of DJI’s existing audience. The company already sells drones, action cameras, microphones, gimbals, and related accessories. A buyer familiar with DJI controls or audio products needs less persuasion than someone approaching an unknown camera brand.
However, the available report does not disclose unit sales. It does not explain whether “all-channel” refers to the entire camera market, the panoramic-camera category, or selected product lists. It also provides no comparison with prior launches.
The wording therefore requires care. DJI reportedly led the relevant rankings during the first 24 hours. The evidence does not establish that it outsold every competing model worldwide or secured a durable share lead.
Launch charts can also reward a short burst of preorders. Buyers may wait for a release date, complete purchases within the same narrow window, and create a dramatic opening spike. Longer periods reveal whether demand continues after enthusiasts and existing brand customers have placed their orders.

The new generation focuses more directly on reducing friction around that baseline. DJI promotes subject following, NFC pairing, and automatic AI editing. NFC, or near-field communication, lets two nearby devices exchange a small amount of connection information after a tap.
A faster phone connection sounds minor beside an 8K specification. In practice, it addresses one of the repetitive tasks that can make a dedicated camera feel inconvenient. The user must connect, preview, transfer, reframe, and export before a clip reaches a social platform.
Subject following addresses the next stage. A 360 camera sees every direction, but that abundance creates a selection problem. Software must identify the important person or object and keep it inside a conventional frame as the camera moves.
Automatic editing tries to shorten the final stage. DJI says its tools can identify usable footage and assemble a video with limited manual work. That claim needs real-world testing across crowded scenes, overlapping subjects, and inconsistent lighting.
The timing is especially sharp because the category’s technical ceiling has moved. The Insta360 X6 supports 8K recording at up to 50 frames per second, according to independent X6 testing. It also offers 10-bit color across its shooting modes and larger sensors than its predecessor.
This means buyers are no longer comparing one capable camera with a clearly outdated alternative. They are comparing different combinations of frame rate, color, durability, software, storage, and ecosystem compatibility.
DJI’s answer is easy to communicate. Capture more motion detail, connect with fewer steps, let software find the subject, and produce a shareable clip faster. That message fits travel, sports, parties, and family recording without requiring buyers to master a professional editing suite.
The release also follows unusually quickly after DJI’s first-generation model. The original Osmo 360 arrived in July 2025. A second model roughly one year later signals that DJI sees the category as an active product line, not an experiment.
DJI Versus Insta360 Is Now a Workflow Contest
The main competition is no longer 8K versus 8K. It is the complete path from recording to a usable video.
Insta360 enters this contest with years of specialized experience. Its cameras helped popularize the idea that creators could record first and choose the angle later. That promise depends on software because raw spherical footage is rarely the final product.
DJI brings a different advantage. Its hardware portfolio already connects cameras with microphones, mounts, batteries, and creator habits. A user who owns DJI equipment may value compatibility more than a small difference in laboratory image quality.
The Osmo 360 II therefore pressures Insta360 on two fronts. It challenges the company’s specifications while also offering buyers a route into a wider hardware family. Insta360 must defend the depth of its 360 workflow, not only the quality of its lenses and sensors.
The X6 remains a formidable response. TechRadar’s testing found excellent daylight and low-light image quality, 136 minutes of continuous 8K recording, and no overheating during that test. The review also praised its replaceable lenses and substantial waterproofing.
Those strengths expose the limits of a simple launch-chart narrative. A buyer taking a camera underwater, recording long events, or applying detailed color adjustments will evaluate very different criteria from a buyer making quick travel clips.
Software can change the verdict again. The same X6 review reported repeated mobile-app crashes during editing and export on an iPhone 13. Its desktop software performed better, although it lacked the mobile app’s automatic editing tools.
That result illustrates the category’s central tradeoff. Automated features can reduce effort, but they also place more pressure on mobile hardware and software reliability. A feature list has little value if an export fails after a long transfer.
DJI has faced similar scrutiny. An early Osmo review described the first generation as a serious threat to Insta360. Other reviewers still found reasons to prefer Insta360’s established editing environment.

Insta360’s defense rests on accumulated experience with that problem. DJI’s attack combines competitive imaging hardware with the promise of fewer steps. The launch-day ranking indicates that many Chinese buyers found DJI’s offer compelling enough to act immediately.
It does not show which company produces the better final video across varied conditions. That judgment requires direct footage, identical scenes, comparable settings, and completed exports from both platforms.
The Mechanism Behind DJI’s 8K Push
Higher frame rates are valuable because reframing discards much of a panoramic image, but 8K also creates heavier files and harder processing demands.
A conventional camera points toward the subject. Most of its recorded pixels contribute to the final frame. A 360 camera distributes detail around a complete sphere, including areas the editor will never show.

That division explains why one universal winner is unlikely. DJI’s launch pitch targets creators who want high-specification capture with a shorter route to sharing. Insta360 can answer with image quality, durability, and a workflow shaped by years of category focus.
What the Sales Claim Does Not Prove
A first-place badge cannot verify image quality, software reliability, sustained demand, or the boundaries of the ranking itself.
The most immediate question concerns the sales data. The 36Kr item attributes the performance to reported launch results but does not provide raw orders, revenue, returns, or an independent market audit.

That uncertainty should shape purchasing decisions. Buyers who need a camera immediately should compare finished footage and complete editing workflows. Those upgrading from a recent model should wait for tests that isolate the second generation’s practical gains.
Three Signals Will Decide Whether DJI Keeps the Lead
The next phase depends on sustained sales, independent workflow tests, and Insta360’s response rather than another launch-day headline.
The first signal is sustained demand across several weeks. DJI’s position becomes stronger if the Osmo 360 II remains near the top after preorders and early enthusiasts are exhausted. Falling quickly would suggest the first-day result reflected launch concentration more than broad adoption.
Useful evidence would include consistent retail placement, a large base of verified customer reviews, and continued availability without unusual discounting. Return patterns would be even more valuable, although manufacturers and retailers rarely publish them.
The second signal is independent testing of the complete 8K workflow. Reviewers should record identical scenes with the Osmo 360 II and Insta360 X6, then track every step from pairing through final export.
They should report sustained recording behavior, transfer time, tracking accuracy, app crashes, render speed, and final image quality. Tests should include both recent flagship phones and older devices because compatibility can determine whether automatic editing feels convenient.
The strongest validation would come from repeated results across several reviewers. One clean demonstration proves that a feature can work. Consistent performance across environments shows that buyers can depend on it.
The third signal is Insta360’s software and product response. The X6 already offers major strengths in image quality, color, battery performance, lens replacement, and waterproofing, according to early independent testing.
If Insta360 stabilizes its mobile app and improves automatic editing, DJI’s workflow advantage becomes harder to sustain. If DJI delivers better tracking and faster exports first, the specialist will face greater pressure to simplify its experience.
Firmware will play a major role for both companies. Modern cameras increasingly improve after launch through changes to tracking, exposure, stabilization, transfer behavior, and device compatibility. Buyers should watch release notes, not only hardware announcements.
Creators also need to match the product to their own bottleneck. A traveler may value quick phone pairing and automatic highlights. A professional may prioritize color depth, manual control, reliable desktop integration, and replaceable optics.
Teams handling many recordings should create a repeatable comparison log. Saving reviews, sample footage, firmware notes, and workflow observations in a searchable personal knowledge base can prevent purchasing decisions from collapsing into isolated specification checks.
DJI has already cleared one important hurdle. Its second 360 camera generated enough immediate demand to top several reported Chinese retail rankings during its first day.
The harder contest begins after checkout. Can Osmo 360 II maintain its highest recording mode, find the right subject, survive real travel, and produce a finished clip without turning convenience into another editing project?
