Huawei Is Near 100 Million HarmonyOS 6 Devices, but the Bigger Number Tells a Different Story

Huawei has not yet passed 100 million HarmonyOS 6 devices, despite a viral Chinese headline suggesting that the milestone already happened. The verified count was more than 80 million devices on August 20, 2026. Huawei expects the total to cross 100 million during the fourth quarter.

That correction does not make the underlying story less significant. HarmonyOS 6 grew from 36 million current-generation devices at the end of 2025 to more than 80 million within eight months. Meanwhile, OpenHarmony, its open-source foundation, had reached 1.3 billion connected devices by June.

Those numbers measure different things, and combining them creates a misleading picture. Yet together they explain why Huawei has built unusual momentum against Android and iOS inside China. The company is operating both a consumer platform and an industrial operating-system project, with hardware sales feeding one side and institutional adoption feeding the other.

Huawei Has 80 Million HarmonyOS 6 Devices, Not 100 Million Yet

The immediate news is an 80 million milestone and a 100 million forecast, not a completed march past 100 million.

At the HarmonyOS Ecosystem Conference in Shenzhen on August 28, Huawei disclosed that more than 80 million devices ran HarmonyOS 6. The count was measured on August 20. The company expects that number to exceed 100 million in the fourth quarter of 2026.

That means the viral claim moved a forecast into the present tense. Huawei needs another 20 million devices, or roughly one-quarter of the verified base, to reach its stated target.

The difference matters because several HarmonyOS statistics circulate at the same time. They refer to different versions, products, and technical relationships.

HarmonyOS 6 is Huawei’s current commercial operating system for its consumer hardware. The reported 80 million devices include compatible products that have shipped with the software or received an upgrade.

OpenHarmony is the open-source operating-system project hosted by the OpenAtom Foundation. Companies and public institutions can use its source code to build specialized operating systems for products ranging from payment terminals to railway equipment.

The broader “HarmonyOS ecosystem” is an even wider category. It can include earlier HarmonyOS versions, connected consumer products, software services, developers, and devices linked through Huawei’s distributed technology.

Huawei’s 2024 annual report said HarmonyOS ran on more than one billion devices. Its 2025 annual report later reported more than 36 million devices running HarmonyOS 5 or HarmonyOS 6. Those statements are not contradictory because the newer figure uses a narrower version-based definition.

The same distinction applies to application counts. Huawei said the platform had more than 100,000 native applications in August 2026. It also said HarmonyOS phones could obtain more than 400,000 applications.

A native HarmonyOS application is developed for Huawei’s current platform and interfaces. An obtainable application may include another supported distribution or delivery format. Treating both counts as native applications would overstate the maturity of the independent software catalog.

OpenHarmony’s numbers cover another layer. At Huawei’s June developer conference, the company said OpenHarmony supported 1.3 billion ecosystem devices, more than 100 commercial distributions, and 13,000 code contributors.

Those devices are not 1.3 billion Huawei smartphones. Many are embedded or industrial products that consumers would not recognize as conventional computers.

The original hot-list question therefore contains a useful misunderstanding. There is no single HarmonyOS counter. There are overlapping measurements for current Huawei installations, the wider consumer ecosystem, and OpenHarmony-derived products.

The most defensible headline is still substantial. Huawei more than doubled its current-generation installed base after 2025 and approached 100 million without Android application compatibility at the system’s center.

That achievement deserves analysis. It simply deserves the correct number first.

Why Huawei HarmonyOS Growth Accelerated in 2026

Huawei is scaling HarmonyOS through installed hardware, coordinated upgrades, and direct developer investment rather than waiting for an open market to adopt it organically.

The first growth engine is Huawei’s hardware base. A new operating system normally needs manufacturers before it can reach consumers. Huawei already controls phones, tablets, watches, televisions, computers, vehicle software, and other connected products.

That ownership shortens the route from operating-system development to distribution. Huawei can ship HarmonyOS on new products and offer upgrades to compatible devices already in customers’ hands.

The company also controls important release timing. Major phones can introduce a new system version, while update programs move older models afterward. Each hardware cycle gives the platform another wave of installations.

This is one reason the 2026 expansion can look sudden. The underlying work began years earlier, but an operating-system counter jumps when large device groups become eligible for upgrades.

Huawei’s reported timeline shows that compounding effect. HarmonyOS 5 devices passed 17 million in September 2025. The combined HarmonyOS 5 and HarmonyOS 6 total reached more than 36 million by year-end.

HarmonyOS 6 passed 66 million devices by June 12, 2026. It exceeded 70 million later that month and reached more than 80 million by August 20.

The second engine is developer support. Operating systems live or die through applications, but application developers usually follow users. Users also hesitate when their important applications are missing.

Huawei has attacked that circular problem with engineering assistance, promotion, incentives, and direct coordination with major Chinese service providers. It is spending money to reduce the cost of being early.

In September 2025, Huawei announced a CNY 1 billion program supporting artificial-intelligence development within HarmonyOS. The company also reported receiving more than 10 million user suggestions, with over 96 percent receiving what it called rapid resolution.

These figures are company claims, not independent measurements of software quality. They still reveal Huawei’s operating model. The company is treating developer supply and user complaints as managed production inputs.

By the end of 2025, Huawei reported more than 10 million registered developers and over 350,000 applications and services in AppGallery. It also reported more than 20,000 native HarmonyOS applications and atomic services one year earlier.

By August 2026, Huawei said native applications had passed 100,000. That fivefold increase explains more about adoption than a simple device total.

Consumers do not choose a mobile operating system because its source tree is elegant. They choose it when payments, transportation, messaging, video, shopping, banking, and workplace services are available.

Huawei has focused on that practical threshold. It does not need to reproduce every obscure Android application before mainstream Chinese buyers consider the platform usable. It needs the services that structure daily life.

The company’s domestic position makes this strategy more plausible. China has large platform companies, extensive mobile-payment use, and a concentrated group of widely used super apps.

Convincing those companies to support HarmonyOS closes more user journeys than signing thousands of small applications alone. Huawei can then promote independent developers to expand the catalog’s depth.

The third engine is necessity. US restrictions deprived Huawei devices of licensed Google Mobile Services and constrained access to important technology.

That pressure removed the comfortable middle path. Huawei could not treat its operating system as an experiment while relying indefinitely on Google’s commercial ecosystem.

The company consequently linked phones, developer tools, application distribution, cloud services, and connected hardware around one strategic objective. Few operating-system projects receive that level of sustained corporate attention.

This combination answers why HarmonyOS grew quickly in 2026. Huawei had millions of upgrade candidates, controlled the hardware pipeline, financed development, and considered software independence essential.

Huawei Versus Android Is Now a Platform Conflict

The real opponent is not one phone brand; it is Android’s mature application economy and global distribution model.

HarmonyOS originally occupied an ambiguous position. Early phone versions retained substantial compatibility with the Android software world, reducing the immediate cost for users and developers.

HarmonyOS NEXT changed that bargain. The platform, commercialized as HarmonyOS 5, stopped supporting standard Android applications and moved toward Huawei’s native development stack.

That separation makes the current installation growth more meaningful. Huawei is no longer counting only devices using a branded interface above familiar Android foundations. It is persuading users to enter a distinct application environment.

It also makes comparisons harder. Android is an operating-system foundation, a developer target, and a global distribution network supported by many manufacturers.

Huawei controls nearly every major consumer gateway into current HarmonyOS. Its expansion therefore resembles a vertically coordinated platform migration more than Android’s multi-vendor growth.

This model provides speed inside Huawei’s base. It also concentrates risk. A weak Huawei hardware cycle can slow operating-system adoption because competing phone manufacturers do not currently provide another large consumer channel.

Android has the opposite structure. Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and many other manufacturers sell Android devices across numerous markets. Developers can reach that combined audience through a familiar technical target.

Apple offers a second comparison. Like Huawei, Apple controls both hardware and operating-system distribution. However, iOS already has a worldwide user base and a mature application business.

Huawei is attempting Apple-style integration while rebuilding many services lost through its separation from Google. It must do that within a market still dominated by Android devices.

The company has nevertheless established a meaningful domestic position. Counterpoint’s market tracking shows HarmonyOS competing with iOS for second place in China, although quarterly rankings can change.

The latest China market data also identifies limited HarmonyOS NEXT application compatibility as a continuing headwind for Huawei. That is a useful counterweight to the company’s installation announcements.

A platform can gain share while frustrating some users. Strong hardware demand can carry an operating system through an incomplete application transition, especially when customers already own related devices.

Huawei also benefits from China’s unusual software environment. Google Play and several Google services were already unavailable to ordinary users in mainland China before HarmonyOS NEXT arrived.

Abandoning standard Android applications therefore creates less disruption there than it would in North America or Europe. Domestic applications matter more than Google’s consumer service bundle for many Chinese buyers.

That advantage does not transfer automatically overseas. A global smartphone buyer may expect Google Maps, YouTube, WhatsApp, banking applications, workplace authentication, local transportation services, and connected-car support.

A missing local service can outweigh dozens of available applications. Software catalogs are not interchangeable collections of icons. Their value depends on geography, language, employment, and social networks.

Established Reuters reporting framed HarmonyOS as part of China’s effort to reduce reliance on Android and Windows. It also noted that a stronger HarmonyOS could encourage OpenHarmony adoption.

That connection gives Huawei a strategic advantage Android lacks in this market. HarmonyOS growth is not assessed only through immediate consumer revenue. It also supports a broader policy goal around domestic digital infrastructure.

Android remains the primary opponent because it defines the application compatibility users expect. Apple matters in premium hardware, but iOS is not the technical foundation Huawei is replacing.

The central conflict is therefore clear. Huawei can coordinate migration faster than an ordinary software entrant, while Android retains far greater application scale and international reach.

OpenHarmony Expands the Market Beyond Smartphones

OpenHarmony grows quickly because it can enter specialized devices that neither Android nor HarmonyOS phones were designed to serve.

Huawei donated the initial OpenHarmony code to the OpenAtom Foundation in 2020 and 2021. The foundation now governs the project as an open-source operating-system platform.

That arrangement gives manufacturers a path to build customized commercial distributions. They can adapt the foundation to hardware with different processors, memory limits, displays, and connectivity requirements.

The June 2026 OpenHarmony figures included 130 million lines of code, more than 13,000 contributors, and over 500 partner organizations. More than 1,700 compatible products had passed assessment.

The reported 1.3 billion ecosystem devices cover many categories. The foundation cites deployment across transportation, electricity, healthcare, education, finance, and connected consumer products.

This creates a lower-friction adoption path than the consumer smartphone market. An industrial device does not need millions of entertainment applications before a buyer can deploy it.

A utility terminal needs the software required for its defined task. A railway display needs reliable operation, device management, communications, and the approved applications for that environment.

That narrower requirement changes the platform economics. A vendor can justify adapting OpenHarmony for one contract or product family without attracting a worldwide community of consumer developers.

Chinese organizations also have strong incentives to reduce dependency on foreign software in important systems. Procurement policy, security requirements, supply-chain planning, and domestic standards can all influence platform selection.

OpenHarmony fits that demand while allowing vendors to retain control over their commercial distributions. They receive a shared technical foundation without giving Huawei complete ownership of every deployment.

Huawei benefits indirectly. A larger OpenHarmony community produces code, trained developers, testing experience, hardware support, and shared technical concepts that can strengthen the broader HarmonyOS environment.

The relationship is not identical to Google’s relationship with the Android Open Source Project. Huawei’s commercial HarmonyOS contains its own frameworks, services, interfaces, and product decisions.

An OpenHarmony-compatible industrial device is not automatically a HarmonyOS phone. Its presence should not be counted as a consumer choosing Huawei over Android or iOS.

This distinction exposes the biggest problem with the “suddenly past 100 million” narrative. OpenHarmony had already moved far beyond 100 million connected devices under its broad ecosystem definition.

HarmonyOS 6, the relevant consumer milestone, remained at 80 million on the latest verified date. The two figures describe complementary strategies, not one installation counter.

OpenHarmony still helps explain Huawei HarmonyOS growth. It extends developer training and operating-system familiarity into universities, suppliers, public infrastructure, and enterprise projects.

The project also has more than 100 commercial distributions, according to Huawei’s HDC 2026 disclosure. Examples include industry systems for electrical grids, telecommunications, and urban transportation.

Each distribution can serve a market that would be difficult for one standard consumer release to address. That adaptability turns OpenHarmony into an institutional expansion channel.

It also introduces fragmentation risk. Multiple vendors can change interfaces, hardware support, and release schedules. Applications written for one specialized distribution may require modification before working on another.

Compatibility assessments and common standards can limit that problem, but they cannot eliminate every commercial difference. Android has spent years managing similar tensions between shared foundations and manufacturer customization.

OpenHarmony’s growth is therefore both real and different. It shows organizational reach across connected infrastructure, not direct parity with Android’s consumer application ecosystem.

What the Numbers Still Do Not Prove

Rapid installations establish distribution, but they do not yet establish global demand, sustained engagement, or complete application compatibility.

Huawei publishes many of the central adoption figures. The company is well positioned to count its own activated devices, developers, applications, and upgrade activity.

However, public announcements do not always explain methodology in enough detail for independent reproduction. Readers should distinguish a reported company metric from third-party market research.

The 80 million figure, for example, describes devices running HarmonyOS 6. It does not necessarily equal 80 million monthly active people.

One person may own a phone, tablet, watch, and computer. A device may remain activated while receiving little use. Upgrade installations can also rise before engagement stabilizes.

The 100,000 native-application count requires similar caution. Application totals do not measure how many titles remain actively maintained or offer the same features as their Android versions.

Large catalogs can include atomic services, which are lightweight capabilities that users can access without installing a conventional full application. These services are useful, but they are not directly comparable to every listing in another store.

The 400,000 obtainable-application figure is broader still. Huawei has not publicly provided enough detail in the cited announcement to treat all those applications as fully native HarmonyOS software.

Application quality matters more as Huawei reaches mainstream users. Early adopters tolerate missing features and frequent updates. Ordinary customers expect banking, identity, accessibility, media, and workplace functions to operate consistently.

Huawei’s decision to remove Android compatibility makes those gaps more visible. Compatibility once gave users a bridge while native applications developed. The independent platform must now support complete daily workflows itself.

Hardware concentration creates another uncertainty. Current HarmonyOS growth largely follows Huawei’s consumer products and existing customers in China.

If other major phone manufacturers do not adopt the system, its reachable consumer market remains tied to Huawei shipments. OpenHarmony’s industrial breadth does not automatically solve that consumer dependency.

International expansion is a harder test. Huawei can succeed as a major Chinese platform without becoming a worldwide third mobile ecosystem.

Outside China, Google services and established Android applications carry greater weight. Huawei would need local developers, payment providers, banks, government services, media companies, and enterprise-software vendors to participate.

Regulation and geopolitics can also work in both directions. Chinese policy can favor domestic technology adoption, while security concerns and trade restrictions can constrain Huawei in other markets.

The operating system’s technical independence does not remove semiconductor limits either. Huawei must sustain competitive devices alongside its software expansion.

These constraints do not invalidate the growth. They define what the current evidence supports.

The evidence supports a fast domestic migration, a growing native catalog, and extensive OpenHarmony adoption in connected equipment. It does not yet support global equivalence with Android or iOS.

The strongest skeptical interpretation is not that every figure is false. It is that device, ecosystem, application, and user counts answer different questions.

Combining them produces an impressive but analytically weak total. Separating them reveals a more credible achievement and a clearer set of remaining risks.

Three Signals That Will Decide Whether Huawei’s Momentum Holds

The next test is whether Huawei converts coordinated expansion into durable use without relying on blurred ecosystem totals.

The first signal is the verified HarmonyOS 6 count after the fourth quarter begins. Huawei needs to move from 80 million devices on August 20 to more than 100 million before year-end.

Crossing that threshold on schedule would confirm that the 2026 upgrade and hardware pipeline retained its pace. Missing it would suggest that easier migrations were completed earlier in the year.

The composition of growth matters too. New flagship sales indicate product demand, while upgrades show Huawei’s ability to move existing customers into the independent environment.

The second signal is application depth, not another headline catalog number. Huawei should show that native applications retain feature parity, update frequency, and active usage after their initial release.

Banking, travel, workplace, accessibility, media, and specialized professional applications deserve particular attention. Weakness in one essential category can keep users on Android or iOS.

Developers will also watch the economics. Huawei can finance an early migration, but application publishers need lasting user activity and predictable development costs.

Counterpoint’s warning about application compatibility makes this the clearest challenge to Huawei’s narrative. If complaints decline while active use rises, the platform becomes harder to dismiss as a hardware-led migration.

The third signal is adoption outside Huawei-controlled consumer hardware. This includes other manufacturers using OpenHarmony distributions and credible international support for commercial HarmonyOS.

Industrial expansion would strengthen OpenHarmony’s position as a common Chinese software foundation. Another large consumer manufacturer would change the competitive structure more dramatically.

Without that second consumer channel, Huawei remains both platform owner and principal distributor. That model can support a large domestic business but limits ecosystem independence from one company’s hardware cycle.

International launches would present an even stricter test. Huawei would need local applications and services before users could treat HarmonyOS as a practical Android alternative.

These three signals should be read in order. First comes the 100 million HarmonyOS 6 target. Next comes evidence that users can complete important tasks. Finally comes distribution beyond Huawei’s existing domestic base.

The rapid rise is not mysterious when viewed through that sequence. Huawei combined hardware control, mandatory strategic focus, developer spending, major domestic applications, and policy-aligned open-source deployment.

What remains uncertain is whether those advantages can produce an enduring third consumer platform beyond China. Android still offers broader hardware choice, while Apple retains a mature premium ecosystem.

For developers and technology buyers, the right question is no longer whether Huawei has a functioning operating system. It clearly does. The better question is which measurement reflects the market you actually serve.

Watch active current-generation devices for consumer reach. Watch maintained native applications for platform health. Watch OpenHarmony distributions for industrial adoption. Most importantly, do not combine those totals into one claim.
