Huawei launched the Mate XT 2 on September 7, giving its tri-fold phone a faster chip, updated hinges, and HarmonyOS 7. The timing matters because Samsung now has its own tri-fold device, ending Huawei's period as the category's only established vendor.

Huawei Mate XT 2 Turns a Showcase Into a Product Line

The company introduced the original Mate XT in September 2024. That device arrived as the first commercially released phone with a screen that folded twice. Huawei followed it with the Mate XTs in 2025 and has now delivered another generation.
The release cadence matters. Experimental devices often disappear after their initial publicity cycle because their manufacturing costs, repair rates, or demand become difficult to justify. Huawei has instead returned to the same form factor with revised hardware and software.
The Mate XT 2 folds into a conventional 6.5-inch phone and opens into a 10.2-inch display. That expanded surface approaches compact tablet territory while remaining part of one mobile device.
Huawei lists a resolution of 2,232 by 3,184 pixels in the fully opened configuration. The standard model's internal display supports an adaptive refresh rate reaching 90 Hz. Privacy-screen variants extend that internal panel to 120 Hz.
According to the official Mate XT 2 specifications, the device weighs about 299 grams before its additional screen surface layer. Huawei says the complete weight with that layer is approximately 304 grams.
Those figures show the compromise behind the design. The Mate XT 2 offers substantially more screen area than a conventional phone, but users must carry considerably more mass. It also contains two hinges and several display sections that must remain aligned.
The phone uses Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro processor and ships with 16 GB of memory. Storage options range from 256 GB to 2 TB, depending on the screen and stylus configuration.
Huawei also added ultra-thin glass over the flexible internal display. The material can improve rigidity and surface consistency, but it does not remove the underlying vulnerability of a folding panel. Long-term durability still depends on the entire assembly.
The company says its reworked structure provides IP58 and IP59 protection against dust and water. These ratings represent an important addition for a device containing two moving hinges. They do not make the phone immune to particles, impacts, or repeated folding stress.
The Mate XT 2 also introduces a hardware privacy-screen option. Huawei describes it as an independent dual-pixel design that limits viewing from the side without reducing the listed resolution.
That feature has a clear use case. A user could open a document, financial worksheet, or private message on the larger screen while traveling. The expanded canvas becomes more practical when nearby passengers cannot easily read it.
However, Huawei notes that the privacy effect does not cover one section near the phone's bottom edge. The feature therefore reduces casual observation without providing complete visual isolation.
The camera system includes a 50-megapixel main sensor with a variable aperture, a 40-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. Optical stabilization appears on the main and telephoto modules.
Huawei says its third-generation color sensor improves color reproduction by 95 percent over the previous model. That figure comes from company testing and has not yet been independently validated across varied lighting conditions.
The device also supports ECG analysis through a hand-held measurement process. Huawei says the feature received registration as a Class II medical device in China. Availability and regulatory status can differ elsewhere.
The Mate XT 2 is scheduled to reach Chinese buyers on September 12. A stylus bundle is expected later in the month. Huawei has not established an equivalent international release plan.
That limited market scope is central to the story. Huawei has built a third generation of tri-fold hardware, yet many global consumers cannot evaluate it through ordinary carrier and retail channels.
HarmonyOS 7 Makes the Larger Screen More Than a Display
The Mate XT 2 depends on HarmonyOS 7 to turn its unusual screen into a credible productivity device.
A larger display offers little value when applications simply stretch their phone interfaces. Huawei must coordinate window management, multitasking, input, and cross-device behavior across several physical screen configurations.
HarmonyOS 7 is designed to manage those transitions. Huawei announced the operating system alongside the new phone and opened an initial public beta for selected devices in mainland China on September 7.

Huawei has also included document comparison, screen annotation, split-screen translation, and large-screen markup functions. These tools target tasks that become uncomfortable on a narrow phone display.
Consider a business traveler reviewing a contract before a meeting. The user could place two document versions side by side, annotate the updated version, and keep a conversation visible in another area.
The hardware alone does not create that workflow. It requires applications that understand the display, consistent window behavior, and an interface that remains readable through each folding state.
Huawei describes Celia as a system-level agent within HarmonyOS 7. A system-level agent can access operating-system functions and coordinate actions across supported applications, rather than answering isolated prompts.
The company says Celia can perceive more than 200 categories of system data and invoke over 2,100 system capabilities. Huawei also claims connections to more than 500 partner skills and over 2,000 HarmonyOS agents.
These numbers describe potential integrations, not demonstrated reliability. The important question is how often Celia completes multi-step tasks without losing context, choosing the wrong application, or requesting manual correction.
Huawei's published HarmonyOS 7 details also describe fraud detection for suspicious calls, altered voices, and deceptive webpages. Some features require later software updates and depend on supported devices.
The operating system adds a digital asset inheritance feature for photos, notes, and other selected information. Designated recipients must pass identity checks before receiving access.
This feature raises difficult implementation questions. An inheritance system must distinguish death or incapacity from account theft while preserving privacy during the original owner's lifetime.
Huawei says HarmonyOS 7 improves performance and battery life on supported devices. Its test comparisons use Huawei hardware, specific application versions, and controlled internal conditions.
Those claims should not be treated as independent benchmarks. Real performance depends on device age, installed applications, network conditions, thermal limits, and individual usage patterns.
Huawei reported that HarmonyOS 6 and HarmonyOS 7 devices had surpassed 85 million units by September 7. The company said 80 million HarmonyOS 6 devices had been activated by August 20.
The difference suggests rapid additions during the weeks surrounding the new release. Yet Huawei's count combines phones, tablets, and computers, so it cannot be read as smartphone market share.
The figure still signals meaningful domestic scale. Developers deciding whether to support a separate mobile platform need evidence that users exist and will install their applications.
HarmonyOS has moved beyond an operating-system experiment. Its harder challenge is maintaining complete, frequently updated applications across banking, travel, business communication, entertainment, and specialized professional services.
That software question matters more on the Mate XT 2 than on an ordinary phone. Huawei is asking buyers to value complex multitasking, which requires deeper application support than basic messaging and media playback.
Samsung Is Now Huawei's Direct Tri-Fold Opponent
