The confirmed product still carries clear significance. The original Mate XT introduced a tri-fold structure that opened into a 10.2-inch display. Instead of using one hinge like a conventional book-style foldable, it used two hinges and three connected screen sections.

A tri-fold device expands the central promise of the category. It attempts to combine a conventional phone, a book-style foldable, and a small tablet within one object. Omdia says book-style devices accounted for 69% of foldable shipments during the first half of 2026. It also says Huawei and Samsung collectively controlled 75% of that segment. Apple would therefore be entering a market with established leaders, not an empty field.

Huawei’s response is to push beyond the standard book design. A tri-fold can provide more display area and more operating modes. It can also demonstrate manufacturing skill that rivals cannot immediately copy at volume.

Apple does not need to match that complexity to create pressure. A conventional book-style foldable could attract users who avoided Android alternatives because they preferred iOS, Apple services, or existing accessories.
