Apple and Samsung also face component inflation, but their premium positioning gives them more room to absorb or transfer it.
Huawei Xiaomi Price Changes Reach Existing Phones
The September adjustments show that component inflation has moved from supply-chain forecasts into retail channels.
The price changes took effect in China on September 1, 2026. Huawei adjusted the Mate 80 family and a model in its Enjoy range. Xiaomi changed pricing across the Xiaomi 17, Redmi K90, and Redmi Turbo families, while Honor adjusted selected Power and Magic devices.
The largest increases appeared among Huawei's premium Mate configurations. Xiaomi made smaller but broad changes across both its flagship brand and Redmi, which serves more price-sensitive buyers. Honor also raised prices across more than one market tier.
The original phone price report described the action as a concentrated round of adjustments involving several mainstream models. An English-language account independently reported the same September 1 timing and the same three manufacturers.
That breadth separates this event from a routine launch-price increase. A new model can hide higher component costs behind a fresh processor, camera system, or design. An existing model offers a cleaner comparison because the product has not changed while its retail position has.
Manufacturers can adjust effective prices without rewriting every recommended retail price. They can reduce channel subsidies, withdraw coupons, limit promotional bundles, or raise wholesale prices. Each approach transfers more of the supply-chain burden toward distributors and buyers.
The September event follows earlier adjustments elsewhere in China's handset industry. Oppo introduced increases on several lines in March. Additional changes appeared during the summer as vendors worked through lower-cost component inventory and renegotiated supply contracts.
This sequencing suggests that brands did not receive the full cost shock at once. Inventory purchased under older contracts delayed part of the impact. The pressure became harder to conceal as those components moved through factories and retail channels.
Huawei and Xiaomi executives had already prepared investors and consumers for this outcome. Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei's consumer business, said in August that widespread increases might become necessary to avoid selling phones at a loss. Xiaomi president Lu Weibing also warned that memory costs would remain elevated during the second half.
Neither statement proves that every adjustment came exclusively from memory. A phone's bill of materials also includes processors, displays, cameras, batteries, radio components, and mechanical parts. Qualcomm has separately indicated that newer chipset costs are rising.
However, the timing fits months of evidence from the memory market. Contract prices had climbed across several consecutive quarters before the September changes. Manufacturers therefore faced a choice between lower margins, reduced specifications, smaller production plans, and higher consumer prices.
The Huawei Xiaomi adjustments reveal which option these brands selected for several important products. They protected product specifications and margins by asking the market to accept a higher effective price.
That decision creates the article's central tension. Raising prices addresses a cost problem inside the supply chain, but it can deepen the demand problem already affecting the smartphone market.
AI Servers Are Pulling Memory Away From Phones
The phone increases begin upstream, where AI infrastructure offers memory suppliers better economics than consumer electronics.
Modern smartphones rely on two major memory categories. Mobile DRAM provides temporary working memory for applications, while NAND flash stores the operating system, photos, apps, and other persistent data.
AI servers consume different configurations, especially high-bandwidth memory. HBM stacks memory close to accelerators so enormous AI models can move data quickly. The products are not interchangeable with phone memory, but they compete for investment, engineering attention, fabrication steps, and supporting capacity.
Memory manufacturers have prioritized products serving AI data centers because demand is strong and margins are attractive. This shift limits how quickly suppliers can expand lower-margin capacity for phones, personal computers, and other consumer devices.
According to a February memory cost analysis, contract costs for a mainstream phone memory configuration had nearly tripled year over year during the first quarter. Memory's estimated share of a handset's bill of materials rose from roughly 10% to 15% historically, to approximately 30% to 40%.
That increase affects affordable phones most severely. A premium manufacturer can distribute an added component cost across a more expensive device and a broader services business. A value-oriented manufacturer has less margin and serves customers with lower tolerance for increases.
The pressure intensified during the second quarter. TrendForce estimated that average contract prices for LPDDR4X, an older low-power memory standard, rose at least 70% quarter over quarter. LPDDR5X, the newer standard used in many advanced phones, rose by an estimated 78% to 83%.
Those figures explain why manufacturers cannot solve the problem by moving every model to older components. The older memory used in less expensive devices also became dramatically more costly. Entry-level phones therefore lost one of their traditional cost defenses.
The same mobile DRAM outlook found that brands were changing configurations in response. Twelve gigabytes became more common at the high end while adoption of 16 gigabytes declined. Midrange devices moved back toward eight gigabytes, and entry models clustered around four.
This is shrinkflation expressed through technical specifications. A future phone might retain its headline price but provide less memory than buyers expected from the previous product cycle. Alternatively, it might preserve capacity while charging more.
Software optimization offers only partial relief. Manufacturers can reduce background memory use, limit simultaneous applications, or shift some workloads toward cloud services. Yet those choices can change responsiveness, privacy, connectivity requirements, and ongoing operating costs.
On-device AI makes the tradeoff harder. Features such as local language processing, image generation, and transcription need more memory, not less. Brands are trying to promote AI capabilities while the underlying memory required for those capabilities becomes unusually expensive.
The result is a supply allocation contest between two technology markets. Data centers can justify high component costs through enterprise AI spending. Consumer phone makers must recover the same inflation from households that already see fewer reasons to upgrade.
Huawei Has More Room Than Xiaomi and Honor
The common cost shock does not create equal pressure because product mix, customer loyalty, and regional exposure determine who can pass it through.
Huawei enters the squeeze with strong demand in China and a customer base that has supported its return to the premium market. Progress with domestic components and HiSilicon processors also gives the company a different supply position from many Android competitors.
Counterpoint Research forecasts Huawei handset shipments to grow about 8% in 2026 and another 4.3% in 2027. The firm attributes that exception to Chinese demand, improving domestic component capabilities, and continued processor development.
That does not make Huawei immune. Its September adjustment was broad, and its longer-term growth remains constrained by component availability and manufacturing capacity. However, the company appears less limited by a shortage of interested buyers.
Xiaomi faces a different equation. Its brand extends into premium flagships, but a large part of its global volume comes from aggressively specified phones competing on value. That strategy becomes difficult when memory consumes a much larger share of manufacturing cost.
A value promise requires a visible specification advantage. Cutting memory can weaken that advantage, while raising prices moves the phone closer to competitors with stronger premium recognition. Accepting lower margins protects volume only until profitability becomes untenable.
Honor occupies another complicated position. It sells premium Magic devices but also relies on midrange products and emerging markets. Those markets can deliver growth, yet they expose the company to buyers who respond quickly to price changes.
Apple and Samsung provide the clearest contrast. Apple has a high concentration of premium sales and customers deeply invested in its software and services. Samsung benefits from a broad portfolio and vertical links to memory production, although internal supply does not eliminate market pricing pressure.
TrendForce expects Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and vivo to face both rising memory costs and stronger Huawei competition in China. Its analysis identifies Huawei as the manufacturer most likely to experience the smallest production adjustment, with growth remaining possible during a wider contraction.
This makes the Huawei Xiaomi story more than a synchronized response to inflation. The same action can defend Huawei's margins while creating a greater volume risk for Xiaomi. Huawei is raising prices from a position of stronger domestic demand.
China's market data reinforces that difference. IDC estimated approximately 66 million smartphones shipped in the second quarter, down 4.3% from a year earlier. It marked the fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline.
For the first half, shipments reached about 134 million units, a 4.2% decline. Huawei and Apple led the market, while Xiaomi and Honor remained in a closely contested group behind Oppo and vivo, according to the China shipment tracker.
These numbers describe a market where share gains often come from taking customers from another brand, not from attracting a growing pool of buyers. A price increase can therefore create a direct opening for a rival, an older model, or a refurbished device.
Huawei's strength adds pressure beyond the component shortage. Xiaomi and Honor must manage their own rising costs while defending share against a competitor with improving domestic supply and stronger premium demand.
That is the primary opponent in this cycle: Huawei's pricing flexibility against the value-dependent models of other Chinese brands. Memory inflation supplies the force, but product positioning determines the damage.
Higher Prices Can Deepen the Demand Slump
Passing costs to consumers protects each device's economics, but it risks reducing the number of devices sold.
Counterpoint Research now expects global smartphone shipments to fall 14.3% year over year in 2026. It forecasts another 1.4% decline in 2027 before a more meaningful recovery begins in 2028.
The latest smartphone market forecast identifies three connected pressures: higher component costs, fewer inexpensive devices, and weaker consumer affordability. These forces reinforce one another.
When an affordable model becomes unprofitable, a manufacturer can discontinue it, reduce its specifications, or raise its price. Each response makes the market less attractive to buyers who were already delaying replacement.
Smartphones have also matured. Many devices remain useful for longer because processors, cameras, batteries, and software support have improved. A buyer can often respond to a higher price by keeping an existing phone for another year.
That behavior creates a dangerous feedback loop. Lower demand reduces shipment plans, which spreads development and marketing costs across fewer units. Vendors then have less room for promotions, encouraging even more buyers to wait.
Chinese manufacturers face particular exposure because their portfolios and international expansion depend heavily on midrange and affordable phones. Counterpoint forecasts shipment declines ranging from approximately 15% to 34% among several major Chinese vendors, depending on product mix and geographic reach.
The industry's possible responses are already visible. Brands can lower memory configurations, reuse an older application processor, increase prices, or withdraw models that no longer meet margin targets.
Each option carries a competitive penalty. Lower specifications weaken review scores and future-proofing. Older processors can compromise efficiency or AI features. Higher prices reduce affordability, while canceled models leave gaps that competitors can target.
The forecast deserves scrutiny, however. Market projections have changed rapidly throughout the memory shortage. Production and shipments are also different measures, and temporary inventory movements can make one quarter look healthier than underlying demand.
Consumers sometimes bring purchases forward when they expect future increases. TrendForce reported that this behavior supported short-term production and narrowed its expected 2026 decline. That is not the same as a durable recovery because an early purchase removes demand from a later quarter.
The September price adjustments could produce another limited rush among buyers who expect more increases. Retailers may also use older inventory to soften the transition. Both effects can temporarily support sales without resolving the affordability problem.
Forecasts also depend on the duration of the memory imbalance. Faster expansion of NAND supply would reduce storage pressure, while continued DRAM constraints would keep working-memory costs elevated. Phone makers negotiate contracts at different times, so relief would reach each brand unevenly.
Huawei's expected growth is another reason to avoid treating the decline as uniform. The company can gain share while the overall market contracts. Honor can grow in selected overseas regions while facing pressure in China.
The cautious conclusion is not that every phone will become permanently more expensive. The stronger conclusion is that manufacturers have lost confidence in the old combination of annual specification gains, stable pricing, and expanding volume.
The Real Tradeoff Is Price Versus Capability
Manufacturers can no longer preserve price, specifications, margin, and shipment volume at the same time.
For years, Android competition trained buyers to expect more storage and memory in each product generation. That pattern supported larger apps, better multitasking, longer software lifetimes, and more capable cameras.
The memory squeeze breaks that expectation. Manufacturers must decide which promise to weaken, and the decision will vary across price bands.
At the premium end, brands can raise prices while emphasizing cameras, foldable designs, proprietary processors, or on-device AI. These buyers show greater tolerance, but even premium demand has limits.
In the midrange, a manufacturer might preserve the headline price by reducing memory or using an older chip platform. The phone remains affordable, but its useful life and ability to run future software may decline.
Entry-level devices have the least flexibility. Their margins are narrow, and basic components represent a larger share of total cost. A relatively small supply-chain increase can eliminate the economics of an entire configuration.
Cloud processing is one technical response. A phone with less local memory can send some requests to remote servers. That approach shifts cost from hardware toward network infrastructure and changes the privacy model for users.
It also assumes reliable connectivity. Cloud dependence can introduce latency, consume mobile data, and make features unavailable when a connection fails. It therefore cannot replace local capacity for every application.
Application developers will feel the constraint too. If manufacturers slow memory growth, developers must test new apps against a wider range of devices. Features designed around abundant memory may perform poorly on downgraded configurations.
Enterprise buyers face a related problem. A company choosing phones for field workers must consider device lifespan, security updates, application requirements, and repairability. A lower-memory model might save money initially but require replacement earlier.
Consumers should therefore compare more than model names. A familiar successor may occupy a different price tier or ship with a revised configuration. Discounts can also disguise a higher underlying channel cost for a limited period.
The used and refurbished markets are positioned to benefit. A recent premium phone can offer better specifications than a newly constrained midrange model. Longer ownership cycles also increase demand for batteries, repairs, and extended software support.
That shift would pressure manufacturers from another direction. Each refurbished sale can replace a new-device purchase, reducing the volume available to absorb development costs. It also rewards brands whose older devices retain value.
Huawei can use its domestic ecosystem and brand loyalty to keep customers within its product family. Xiaomi must protect the value perception that helped it scale internationally. Honor must balance premium ambitions against its continuing need for accessible products.
No option removes the underlying tradeoff. If a company preserves specifications, it must accept lower margins or higher prices. If it preserves price, it must find savings elsewhere or reduce capability.
The September adjustments indicate that Huawei, Xiaomi, and Honor are unwilling to absorb the entire increase. Buyers now decide whether the remaining package justifies the new position.
Three Signals Will Define the 2027 Phone Market
Memory supply, holiday demand, and next-generation configurations will show whether this is a temporary reset or a lasting market change.
The first signal is fourth-quarter sell-through after the September adjustments. Sell-through measures devices purchased by consumers, rather than units shipped into retail channels.
Strong sales would show that Huawei and its peers retain pricing power despite weaker market conditions. Heavy promotions or rising inventory would suggest that consumers rejected the new effective prices.
The distinction between brands matters. Huawei can gain share even if total demand falls. Xiaomi and Honor need to demonstrate that buyers still see enough value in their configurations after the adjustments.
The second signal is 2027 memory contracting. DRAM and NAND do not share identical supply outlooks, so manufacturers may receive relief in storage before working-memory costs normalize.
TrendForce expects AI to remain the main driver of memory demand in 2027. Its supply outlook points toward improving NAND availability as new capacity arrives, while DRAM remains more constrained.
If NAND supply eases during the second half of 2027, brands could restore storage configurations or rebuild promotions. Continued DRAM scarcity would still limit multitasking capacity and on-device AI ambitions.
A broader improvement across both categories would weaken the case for lasting retail inflation. Another round of steep contract increases would strengthen it and encourage more portfolio cuts.
The third signal is the specification sheet for the next flagship and midrange launches. Buyers should watch base memory, storage capacity, processor generation, and the gap between entry and premium variants.
Stable specifications alongside higher prices would confirm a straightforward transfer of component costs. Stable prices alongside reduced memory would confirm technical shrinkflation. Reductions in both launch volume and model variety would indicate that brands are retreating from unprofitable segments.
Chipset pricing belongs in the same check. If advanced application processors also rise, relief in one memory category may not be enough to restore previous device economics.
Software support will become more important in this environment. Longer update commitments can justify keeping a phone beyond the usual replacement window. Poor support makes a higher purchase burden harder to accept.
The broader forecast remains unfavorable. Counterpoint expects the global market to decline again in 2027, while Huawei continues growing from its stronger Chinese position. That divergence will test whether Xiaomi and Honor can defend scale without abandoning their value identities.
For buyers, the practical question is no longer whether every device will rise by the same amount. The market is fragmenting by brand strength, product tier, memory allocation, and regional purchasing power.
Watch actual retail sales before accepting claims of pricing power. Compare memory configurations instead of relying on family names. Follow DRAM and NAND separately because their recovery schedules can diverge.
The Huawei Xiaomi adjustments have turned an obscure component cycle into a consumer decision. Will buyers pay more, accept less memory, or keep their current phones longer? The answer will determine whether 2027 brings stabilization or another year of shrinking shipments.
