How to build a literature review matrix
1. Define the review question
State the population, intervention or exposure, comparison, outcome, context, and time boundary that determine whether a study belongs.
2. Add one row per study
Use a stable study ID and preserve a resolvable DOI or URL. Record bibliographic details before interpreting the findings.
3. Extract design and context
Capture study type, population, sample, setting, method, comparison, and outcome so apparently similar results are not compared without context.
4. Record findings precisely
Summarize the primary finding in neutral language. Separate effect direction from evidence strength because a supportive result can still be weak.
5. Document limitations
Write limitations specifically enough to constrain later claims, including sample, measurement, confounding, attrition, generalizability, and reporting gaps.
6. Code themes and relevance
Assign a primary theme and review relevance consistently. Mark background or out-of-scope studies rather than silently deleting useful context.
7. Map convergence and gaps
