Musk Acknowledges Anthropic as Current AI Leader
Updated: Jul 20
Musk posted that Anthropic is obviously the current leader in AI. He said no other company has released a model that matches the quality of its Mythos release, now also referred to as Fable in some discussions.
The post went up on X and was later shared by Rohan Paul. It included a direct reversal of Musk's earlier public comments on the company. Musk added that he still expects Anthropic to ship Mythos 2 in the near term.
Musk also stated that he would not cut off any cooperation with the goal of harming a competitor. He pointed to Tesla's earlier decisions to open its patents and to share its Supercharger network as examples of the same approach.
The claim that Anthropic leads the field rests on one person's assessment of a single model release. No independent benchmark study covering multiple frontier labs has confirmed that ranking.
Musk's change in view creates immediate pressure on other labs that had been viewed as ahead on public perception. OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and xAI now operate under the suggestion that their latest releases fall short of the standard set by Mythos.
The statement also affects how partners and investors weigh commitments. Companies that license models or run evaluations must decide whether to adjust their own roadmaps based on this public ranking.
The core tension is between Musk's earlier criticism of Anthropic and his current public endorsement. That reversal occurred after he reviewed Mythos output and concluded that no competing model reached the same level.
The post further frames competition as something that should not involve deliberate damage through severed partnerships. This stance contrasts with ongoing lawsuits and public disputes between several AI companies over data and talent.
Anthropic has not issued its own confirmation or additional technical details following the post. The company continues to operate under its existing release schedule without commenting on the specific claims.
Other labs have stayed silent on the ranking. No counter-statement has appeared from OpenAI or Google DeepMind in the first days after the post circulated.
Independent observers note that model quality claims on social platforms often shift quickly once new releases appear. The absence of a shared evaluation framework makes it difficult to lock in any single leader for more than a few months.
Future signals to watch include the actual release date and capabilities of Mythos 2, any new benchmark results that include the model alongside current frontier systems, and whether Musk repeats or qualifies the leadership claim in later posts.
