Three Growth Stocks Reveal Uneven Exposure to AI Infrastructure Demand

Google News surfaced three growth stocks under one AI infrastructure headline, despite only two having direct exposure to data center hardware demand.

The August 3 list named Alignment Healthcare, AXT, and Allegro MicroSystems. All three reported measurable growth, but their businesses respond to different catalysts. AXT supplies compound semiconductor substrates, while Allegro sells sensing and power chips. Alignment operates Medicare Advantage health plans.

That mismatch creates the real story. Investors increasingly encounter AI growth stocks through thematic headlines, screeners, and news aggregators. However, a shared label does not make their revenue drivers, capital requirements, or risks comparable.

The original growth stock screen selected companies using expected earnings growth and financial condition. It did not require every company to generate substantial AI infrastructure revenue.

The distinction matters because AI infrastructure stocks now attract expectations tied to data centers, optical networking, power density, and hyperscaler spending. Those expectations can obscure how much of each company’s performance actually depends on those markets.

This is not a ranking or a recommendation to buy any security. It is an examination of the evidence behind three very different growth narratives.

That methodology explains why Alignment Healthcare appeared beside two semiconductor suppliers. Alignment matched the financial growth criteria, even though its primary business has little connection to data center construction.

Alignment operates Medicare Advantage plans for older Americans. It combines insurance benefits, provider networks, clinical services, and a technology platform called AVA. Its growth depends on membership, medical costs, government payment rules, and geographic expansion.

The company reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.3 billion, up 31.6% from the previous year. Medicare Advantage membership reached about 294,100, also increasing by more than 31%.

Alignment also raised the midpoint of its full-year guidance for membership, revenue, adjusted gross profit, and adjusted EBITDA. Those are substantial operating developments, but they are healthcare developments.

The company says AI-enabled capabilities support its clinical and operational infrastructure. That does not make Alignment a direct supplier to the AI data center buildout. Its exposure comes through software-assisted care management rather than servers, optical links, or power systems.

AXT occupies a much more direct position. It manufactures compound semiconductor substrates, which are wafer materials used when standard silicon cannot meet certain performance requirements.

Its indium phosphide substrates support high-speed optical components. Those components move data within and between data centers, where expanding AI workloads require faster links between processors, switches, and storage.

Allegro sits elsewhere in the hardware chain. It develops magnetic sensors and application-specific analog power integrated circuits. Its products help measure current, control power conversion, and improve energy efficiency.

Data centers represent a growing market for Allegro, but the company still serves automotive and industrial customers. Its AI exposure forms one part of a broader sensing and power portfolio.

The shared screen therefore captures three kinds of growth:

AXT said second-quarter 2026 demand for data center optical connectivity helped produce its highest quarterly indium phosphide revenue. Its quarterly results described simultaneous improvements in capacity and manufacturing productivity.

The financial change was considerable. AXT reported second-quarter GAAP net income of $11.1 million, compared with a $1.6 million loss during the first quarter.

The company also recorded a $7 million loss in the same quarter one year earlier. That swing suggests the infrastructure narrative has started appearing in reported results, rather than remaining solely a forecast.

AXT’s agreement with Lumentum adds another demand signal. Under the supply agreement, AXT reserved indium phosphide capacity through December 31, 2031.

The agreement includes a minimum annual commitment from Lumentum. It also requires AXT to support additional capacity when needed, although the filing does not disclose the agreement’s financial value.

Current sensors monitor electrical flow without becoming the main power-carrying path. Power integrated circuits then help regulate conversion, protection, and delivery across the system.

Allegro reported that data center sales quadrupled during fiscal 2026. The market represented 10% of annual sales and 14% of fourth-quarter sales.

Those percentages show fast growth from a smaller base. They also reveal that most Allegro revenue still came from other markets.

The company reported fiscal 2026 sales of $890 million, up 23%. Fourth-quarter sales reached $243 million, while non-GAAP earnings per share nearly tripled from the prior-year quarter.

According to its fiscal results, data center growth accompanied strength in electric vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems.

That mixed portfolio can provide diversification. It can also complicate the investment narrative because automotive cycles, industrial demand, and data center spending do not always move together.

AXT and Allegro therefore illustrate two mechanisms behind AI infrastructure demand. AXT benefits when optical component manufacturers need more high-speed materials. Allegro benefits when denser computing systems require additional sensing and power management.

Neither company controls hyperscaler budgets. Both depend on customers translating infrastructure plans into sustained component orders.

The Real Divide Is Direct Revenue Versus Thematic Association

The strongest AI narrative belongs to companies that can connect infrastructure demand to reported business results.

Alignment Healthcare demonstrates why headline classification requires scrutiny. Its recent operating performance is strong, but the mechanism is Medicare Advantage membership growth.

In its second-quarter update, Alignment reported revenue and membership above the high end of its guidance.

Management attributed performance to its care model, operational infrastructure, and AI-enabled capabilities. Those tools can help coordinate care, identify risks, and support interactions with members.

Still, internal use of AI differs from supplying infrastructure for AI workloads. Almost every large organization now uses software containing machine learning features. That alone does not create direct sensitivity to data center capital spending.

Alignment’s central operating variables include member enrollment, reimbursement, medical benefit costs, and plan quality. A change in optical transceiver demand would not directly determine its quarterly revenue.

By contrast, AXT’s indium phosphide sales respond to optical networking requirements. Allegro’s data center products respond to power density and energy-efficiency needs.

That difference changes what investors should monitor. Alignment requires attention to healthcare regulation and medical economics. AXT requires attention to export controls, manufacturing capacity, and optical demand. Allegro requires attention to product adoption across several end markets.

The contrast also exposes a broader problem with thematic screens. A screen often starts with searchable descriptions, analyst forecasts, or reported business categories.

Third, does the company have a customer commitment? AXT’s Lumentum agreement covers multiple years, although its undisclosed economics limit outside analysis.

Fourth, is the AI market large enough to change consolidated results? Allegro’s data center share reached 14% during its fourth quarter. That is meaningful, yet the company remains diversified.

Alignment does not meet the same direct-exposure test. Its AI systems might improve operations, but healthcare enrollment remains the documented growth engine.

This does not make Alignment’s growth less real. It makes the growth different.

Capacity creates another risk. AXT has said it intends to expand indium phosphide manufacturing as demand grows. New capacity requires spending, employee training, qualification, and stable manufacturing yields.

AXT has the smallest operating scale, but its products occupy the most direct position in optical connectivity. Allegro sits between them, with measurable data center exposure inside a broader semiconductor portfolio.

Market capitalization adds another layer, but it should not substitute for business analysis. A larger valuation can reflect stronger expectations, lower perceived risk, or both.

Forecasts also deserve caution. The original screen relies partly on analyst estimates for future earnings. Estimates change when demand, margins, interest rates, or company guidance changes.

The next earnings cycle should reveal whether these growth stories are strengthening for the same reasons that attracted attention.

The first signal is AXT’s indium phosphide revenue and production execution.

Management has already reported record quarterly sales for the material. The next question is whether that level persists while the company expands capacity.

Investors should watch revenue, gross margin, and comments about manufacturing yields. Rising output with stable or improving margins would support the idea that capacity is meeting real demand.

Export permits remain part of that test. Continued access would reduce one obstacle between orders and recognized revenue. New restrictions or delayed permits would weaken the near-term case.

The Lumentum agreement deserves separate attention. Public filings establish its duration and minimum commitment, but not its financial contribution.

Future disclosures might reveal how quickly reserved capacity converts into shipments. That conversion will matter more than the announcement itself.

The second signal is Allegro’s data center share of total sales.

The company ended fiscal 2026 with data centers representing 14% of fourth-quarter sales. A sustained increase would confirm that this market is becoming a larger earnings driver.

Flat or declining exposure would suggest the earlier increase reflected timing, a small comparison base, or temporary customer purchasing.

Product mix matters as well. Allegro sells both sensing and power solutions, and different components carry different margins.

Management commentary should clarify whether new data center programs are entering production. Investors should distinguish design wins from products already generating material revenue.

The third signal is Alignment Healthcare’s medical cost performance as membership expands.

Revenue and membership growth have already exceeded earlier expectations. The harder test is whether medical costs remain controlled across a larger and more geographically diverse population.

Adjusted EBITDA and gross profit can indicate whether growth is translating into better economics. Changes in government payment rules can also affect the outlook.

Alignment’s technology claims deserve evidence through operating results. Better care coordination should eventually appear through member retention, plan quality, cost trends, or service measures.

These signals reinforce the main divide. AXT and Allegro must prove that infrastructure demand produces repeatable hardware revenue. Alignment must prove that healthcare expansion remains profitable.

That is why a three-stock headline should not become a three-stock thesis. The companies share recent growth, but they do not share the same catalyst.
