US Startup Forterra Sends First Autonomous Vehicles Into Ukraine Combat

Forterra announced it has placed more than 100 Lancer autonomous ground vehicles on the Ukraine battlefield over the past nine months. The vehicles are based on Polaris ATVs and run on gasoline. They have already finished 1,100 missions, driven 2,500 miles, and moved 777,440 pounds of supplies.

These numbers mark the first documented use of American-made autonomous ground systems in active combat. The vehicles also completed 52 casualty evacuations. Most missions still rely on remote human operators because current software cannot yet handle real-time enemy threats without help.

Deployment Numbers Reveal Scale of Field Use

Forterra built the Lancer on a standard Polaris ATV chassis. Each unit carries up to 750 kilograms of cargo and carries a Starlink antenna for constant remote control. Soldiers send the vehicles on repeated supply runs and wounded evacuations across contested areas.

The 1,100 missions logged so far equal several years of normal testing data. The 2,500 miles driven occurred under combat conditions, not on closed test tracks. These figures come directly from the company's operational report.

Remote Control Still Required for Threat Response

Current autonomy levels allow the vehicles to follow planned routes and avoid static obstacles. They cannot yet identify and react to moving enemy forces without a human in the loop. Forterra therefore keeps an operator monitoring each vehicle through the Starlink link.

This hybrid approach delivered the recorded results but limits how many vehicles one person can manage at once. The company states it is combining classic robotics control with newer generative AI models to close that gap.

Funding and Technical Path Forward

Forterra has raised more than 500 million dollars to date. The capital supports both hardware production and the shift toward greater autonomy. Military analysts note that ground autonomy already shows practical value in Ukraine even at this early stage.

The next milestones will focus on sensor fusion and decision speed. Faster threat detection would reduce the need for constant remote oversight. Success here would directly increase the number of vehicles one operator can handle.

Industry Context and Remaining Limits

Several other defense contractors are testing similar systems, yet none have published comparable deployment numbers from an active theater. Forterra's early operational data therefore stands alone for now. The vehicles still depend on clear communication links, a vulnerability in heavy jamming environments.

Questions remain about long-term reliability under sustained fire and extreme weather. The company has not released detailed loss rates or maintenance logs. These gaps keep the current results preliminary rather than conclusive.

What to Watch in the Coming Months

Forterra plans further software updates that add real-time obstacle recognition. Ukrainian units will test the updated vehicles on the same routes already used. Any measurable drop in required operator interventions will serve as the clearest performance signal.

Additional funding rounds or new defense contracts would indicate whether the hybrid model scales beyond the first 100 units. Published results from those tests should appear within the next three to six months.
