Xiaomi 289 Launches Smart Band 11, but HyperOS 4 Is the Bigger Bet

Xiaomi launched Smart Band 11 in China with a 21-day battery claim, HyperOS 4, and a starting offer represented by the search term xiaomi 289. Reservations opened on September 3, 2026, ahead of the first scheduled sales. The product enters a familiar category, but its software strategy creates the real tension.

Smart Band 11 keeps the same screen size and quoted battery duration as Smart Band 10. Xiaomi instead emphasizes higher brightness, sleep heart-rate variability, a thinner body, and tighter connections with phones, homes, and cars.

That approach pressures affordable trackers from Huawei, Amazfit, and other established vendors. It also challenges Xiaomi to prove that operating-system integration matters on a device mainly used for workouts, notifications, and sleep tracking.

The launch is currently limited to China, with no confirmed global schedule. Regional feature availability also remains unclear, particularly for payments, digital cards, vehicle controls, and Apple-related integrations.

The Xiaomi 289 Launch Is an Incremental Hardware Update

Smart Band 11 changes several daily-use details, but it does not redesign Xiaomi’s fitness-band formula.

Xiaomi opened reservations for the device on September 3. Its public launch materials describe four versions: standard, NFC, Ceramic Edition, and a new All-metal Edition.

The standard model has a 1.72-inch AMOLED display surrounded by symmetrical 2-millimeter bezels. Xiaomi rates its peak brightness at 2,000 nits, up from the previous generation’s 1,500-nit rating.

That increase should matter most under direct sunlight. Higher peak brightness can make workout data, navigation menus, and incoming notifications easier to read outdoors.

However, the display is not larger. Xiaomi’s official Band 10 specifications list the same 1.72-inch size and 2-millimeter bezel width.

The new tracker is 9.99 millimeters thick and weighs at least 15.58 grams without its strap. Smart Band 10 measured 10.95 millimeters and weighed 15.95 grams in its standard configuration.

Those differences look modest on paper. Reduced thickness can still improve overnight comfort because the tracker sits closer to the wrist and catches less easily on clothing.

Sleep use matters because Xiaomi has added overnight heart-rate variability tracking. HRV measures changes in the time between heartbeats, providing a signal associated with recovery and physiological stress.

Smart Band 11 also tracks heart rate, blood oxygen, stress, and menstrual health indicators. It supports more than 150 sports modes and retains a 5ATM water-resistance rating.

The company quotes up to 21 days of battery life. That figure matches Smart Band 10, so buyers should not interpret it as a generational increase.

Battery estimates also depend heavily on settings. Continuous measurements, frequent notifications, workouts, and an always-on display usually reduce runtime below a manufacturer’s maximum claim.

Xiaomi’s own documentation for Smart Band 10 tied its 21-day estimate to a controlled usage pattern. Several continuous monitoring options were disabled or limited during that test.

Smart Band 11 therefore offers a familiar hardware proposition. It improves visibility, comfort, sleep data, and material choices while preserving the established dimensions and endurance target.

Yet the device’s most consequential change does not appear in its dimensions. It appears in the operating system running behind the screen.

On a fitness band, that connection is necessarily compact. The display cannot reproduce a phone’s controls, and the device lacks the interaction space of a full smartwatch.

Xiaomi is addressing that limit through short, contextual actions. Promotional materials describe Mi Home controls, vehicle integration, phone notifications, music commands, and customizable watch faces.

The software also introduces a two-column application layout. That arrangement can expose more functions without requiring as much vertical scrolling through a long menu.

Another promoted feature lets the wearer control page turning from the wrist. That function targets situations where touching a phone or tablet would interrupt reading, presenting, or following a recipe.

These are small interactions, but frequency matters more than complexity. A band becomes valuable when it removes repeated phone checks throughout the day.

HyperOS 4 also places Smart Band 11 within Xiaomi’s broader software transition. The company describes its operating system as a shared foundation across personal, home, and automotive devices.

The official HyperOS 4 site highlights a redesigned device center and services that move between supported products. Some features require recent Mi Home software and remain limited to mainland China.

That regional qualification is important. HyperOS branding does not guarantee that every advertised connection will work in every country or with every product.

Xiaomi has also promoted improved compatibility with Apple devices, including notifications and Apple Shortcuts support. Shortcuts lets users trigger predefined actions across compatible applications and devices.

This is a strategically useful concession. Many fitness-band buyers use an iPhone but do not want an Apple Watch, whether because of charging needs, size, or feature preferences.

Better iPhone support can widen Smart Band 11’s audience without requiring Xiaomi phone ownership. It can also make the band a gateway into other Xiaomi products.

Still, Apple controls the deeper parts of iOS. Xiaomi cannot offer identical system integration across iPhones and its own phones unless Apple provides the required interfaces.

The same limitation applies to regional NFC functions. Offline payments and digital access cards depend on local banks, transit networks, security standards, and commercial agreements.

A feature that works in China might arrive differently elsewhere. It might also remain unavailable, even when the hardware contains an NFC radio.

HyperOS 4 therefore represents both an advantage and a dependency. The software can make the band more useful, but only when surrounding devices and regional services support its commands.

Sleep HRV Gives Smart Band 11 Its Clearest Upgrade

The new metric can support practical observations. A wearer might compare recovery after intense exercise, poor sleep, travel, alcohol consumption, or the onset of illness.

However, the band is not a medical device. Xiaomi’s own product materials state that its health features are not designed to diagnose, prevent, predict, or cure disease.

The distinction matters because a wearable can measure a signal without establishing its clinical meaning. Sensor placement, movement, skin contact, and algorithms can all affect readings.

Independent validation will therefore matter more than Xiaomi’s feature list. Reviewers need to test whether the tracker produces stable overnight measurements across different wrists and sleeping conditions.

Users also need transparency about missing data. A clean graph can conceal nights when the sensor lost contact or the algorithm discarded irregular readings.

The software’s recommendations deserve similar scrutiny. Useful guidance should explain changes cautiously and avoid presenting correlation as a medical conclusion.

A recommendation to rest after several unusual readings is different from suggesting a specific health condition. Smart Band 11’s value depends on maintaining that boundary.

The feature also creates a battery tradeoff. More frequent sensing and overnight analysis consume energy, even if the effect varies with configuration.

Xiaomi continues to quote 21 days, but Smart Band 10’s detailed test conditions show why maximum figures need context. Real-world endurance will depend on which health features users enable.

IDC’s broader wearable tracking placed Xiaomi behind Apple and Huawei during the first quarter of 2026. Its market tracker reported respective unit shares of 21.5, 18, and 9.9 percent.

These datasets use different time periods and market definitions, so they should not be treated as contradictory rankings. Together, they show Xiaomi competing at global scale.

Xiaomi’s headline battery figure is a laboratory ceiling, while the device’s most interesting features encourage heavier sensing and interaction.

Smart Band 11 arrives with an attractive combination: a brighter screen, overnight HRV, notifications, connected controls, and a maximum 21-day endurance claim.

Those features do not operate without energy costs. Higher brightness consumes more power during screen use, while frequent measurements require additional sensor activity.

Notifications and device controls also increase screen wake time and wireless communication. Users who buy the band for HyperOS interactions will probably use it differently from Xiaomi’s lightest test profile.

Smart Band 10 illustrates the gap. Xiaomi’s support documentation described a 21-day scenario using a static face and limited health-monitoring settings.

That test included heart-rate checks at 30-minute intervals. It disabled several continuous measurements and assumed relatively modest weekly workout logging.

Smart Band 11’s maximum figure should be read within that tradition. It describes what the hardware can reach under selected conditions, not what every owner will experience.

This does not make the claim false. Standardized tests help buyers compare generations, provided manufacturers disclose the underlying configuration.

The more useful question is whether battery life remains predictable after enabling sleep HRV, continuous stress monitoring, notifications, and automatic brightness.

Reviewers should test several profiles. A basic mode, a full health-tracking mode, and an always-on display mode would show how each feature changes endurance.

Charging frequency matters because the band’s sleep functions need overnight wear. A tracker sitting on a charger cannot measure sleep or establish an uninterrupted HRV baseline.

The advertised brightness also requires careful interpretation. A 2,000-nit peak might activate only under specific lighting conditions or for limited screen content.

Privacy is another unresolved part of the feature. Detailed sleep, heart-rate, stress, and behavioral records can form an intimate profile of a user’s routines.

Buyers need clear explanations covering storage locations, retention periods, synchronization, account controls, and deletion. These policies can differ across countries and service versions.

Global availability remains the largest commercial uncertainty. Xiaomi has confirmed the China launch, but it has not announced equivalent dates or feature packages for North America and other regions.

Even the product name can vary across markets. Local certification, payment partnerships, language support, and companion-app updates can delay or alter a release.

Three Signals Will Decide Whether HyperOS 4 Matters

The first signal is independent endurance testing with the main health features enabled. Reviews should report settings, notification volume, workouts, and screen behavior alongside the number of days achieved.

Strong results would support Xiaomi’s claim that it preserved endurance despite brighter visuals and expanded sensing. Large reductions would expose the 21-day figure as a narrow best case.

The second signal is Xiaomi’s update policy for Smart Band 10 and other recent wearables. Owners need to know which HyperOS 4 functions require new hardware and which can reach older devices.

An inclusive policy would strengthen confidence in Xiaomi’s wearable platform. It could also reduce the immediate reason to upgrade, creating tension between device sales and customer trust.

A highly restrictive policy would give Smart Band 11 more exclusive features. It would also suggest that HyperOS branding does not guarantee sustained software support.

The third signal is the global model’s feature list. Xiaomi must clarify international timing, NFC services, Apple integrations, language coverage, and compatibility with regional Mi Home products.

For existing owners, the decision is more demanding. They should wait for real battery measurements, accuracy comparisons, and confirmed regional functions before treating the update as necessary.
