Xiaomi Fold Goes Smaller, but Its Premium Price Raises a Bigger Question

Xiaomi introduced a smaller xiaomi fold on September 7, pairing an unusual book-style design with a premium launch position and its latest in-house processor. The Xiaomi 18 Fold enters presales immediately, with its first retail release scheduled for September 10 in China.
The important change is not simply another folding screen. Xiaomi has compressed the book-style format around a 5.38-inch outer display and a 7.58-inch inner display. That design sits between familiar large foldables and compact flip phones.
It also arrives while Xiaomi remains a minor foldable vendor in its home market. Huawei leads the category, Honor holds second place, and Samsung remains a global reference point. Xiaomi must prove that a different shape can overcome limited market share and persistent doubts about foldable value.
The Xiaomi Fold Redefines the Book-Style Phone
Xiaomi is betting that a shorter, wider body can make a foldable feel useful before its owner opens it.
Xiaomi announced the 18 Fold during its autumn flagship event on September 7. Chinese technology publications reported the launch that evening, resolving the missing publication date in the original news alert.
The handset uses what Xiaomi describes as a medium-size folding format. Its 5.38-inch cover display is smaller than the outer screens found on many full-size book foldables. The inner display measures 7.58 inches when unfolded.
Both panels use a shape close to the square-root-of-two paper ratio. That ratio appears in standardized paper sizes because sheets retain their proportions when divided in half. Xiaomi is applying the idea to digital documents and split-screen layouts.
The resulting body measures 117.8 millimeters across when closed. It is 163.8 millimeters tall when open, according to specifications reported from the launch. The device measures 10.68 millimeters thick when folded and 5.02 millimeters when open.
At 219 grams, the phone is heavier than many conventional flagships but lighter than several earlier book-style foldables. Samsung lists its Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 grams, giving Xiaomi a demanding benchmark for portability.
The Xiaomi design is considerably wider when closed than a conventional smartphone. That choice should make documents and websites easier to read. It also makes the closed device less familiar for one-handed typing, pockets, and narrow application interfaces.
This is the first source of tension. Xiaomi wants the outer screen to work like a compact reading surface rather than a tall, narrow phone. Buyers must decide whether that improvement offsets the awkward width.
Each AMOLED panel uses an LTPO backplane, which adjusts the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz. Both support full-range direct-current dimming, a P3 color gamut, and Dolby Vision.
Xiaomi claims peak brightness of 4,000 nits under a limited display test condition. That specification does not represent sustained full-screen brightness. Independent testing will determine whether either panel remains readable under prolonged outdoor use.
The inner screen uses ultra-thin glass, commonly called UTG, in two layers. A low-reflection coating sits above the display. Xiaomi says this construction improves durability and reduces visible reflections around the fold.
The company also claims IP58 and IP59 protection against dust and water. Those ratings would strengthen the device’s practical case if independent tests confirm them. Protection can still decline as seals and hinges experience daily wear.
A three-stage linkage supports the hinge. Xiaomi pairs it with a wraparound aluminum frame and reinforced exterior glass. A limited ceramic edition substitutes a silicon-nitride ceramic back for the standard glass construction.
These details make the launch more than a specification refresh. Xiaomi has changed the basic proportions of its large foldable while preserving a tablet-like inner screen. That decision sets up the harder question of who actually wants this format.
Premium Positioning Puts Xiaomi Under Pressure
The launch asks buyers to treat Xiaomi as a premium foldable authority before its sales position supports that status.
The 18 Fold occupies a high-end position within Xiaomi’s phone portfolio. That placement reflects more than screen costs. It packages proprietary silicon, advanced memory, three rear cameras, a complex hinge, and two premium displays.
Yet Xiaomi begins from a weak position in China’s foldable market. IDC data cited in June placed Xiaomi fifth during the first quarter of 2026, with a 4 percent shipment share. Huawei held 60 percent, while Honor reached 21 percent.
Those numbers make Huawei the primary opponent for this launch. Xiaomi is not merely competing against another hardware configuration. It is challenging a company with deeper foldable recognition, broader form-factor coverage, and stronger domestic software loyalty.
Huawei’s lead also rests on demonstrated demand. IDC said the Huawei Pura X exceeded 1.5 million shipments during the first quarter. The unusually wide device helped Huawei maintain overall smartphone leadership in China.
The China market data shows why shape alone cannot guarantee Xiaomi similar results. Huawei combines product novelty with distribution, brand status, and growing HarmonyOS adoption.
Xiaomi also faces pressure from the broader smartphone economy. China shipped approximately 69 million smartphones during the first quarter, down 3.3 percent year over year. Rising component costs pushed manufacturers toward higher-margin models.
Globally, Xiaomi shipped 33.8 million smartphones during that quarter, according to IDC shipment figures. Its volume fell 19.1 percent from the corresponding period, the sharpest decline among the five largest vendors.
That contraction makes the foldable launch strategically useful. Premium devices can raise average selling prices and strengthen a brand’s technical reputation. They can also absorb resources without generating mass-market volume.
Xiaomi must therefore produce two outcomes. The phone needs to attract affluent users away from Huawei. It must also convince ordinary Xiaomi customers that the company belongs at the top of the premium market.
The second challenge may prove harder. Xiaomi built much of its global scale through value-focused hardware. Foldables reverse that equation because their displays, hinges, support requirements, and repair risks create unavoidable costs.
IDC says rising memory prices have intensified those pressures across the smartphone industry. Manufacturers have reduced low-end exposure and concentrated on more profitable devices. Xiaomi’s new foldable fits that industry response.
However, a higher position does not automatically create stronger demand. Buyers compare a foldable against premium conventional phones with better durability, familiar software, and fewer compromises. They also compare it with tablets that provide larger displays.
TrendForce estimated that foldables represented about 1.6 percent of global smartphone shipments in 2025. That small share shows how far the category remains from mainstream replacement behavior.
The research firm also identified high prices, screen creases, and durability concerns as continuing barriers. Its foldable market forecast described many devices as experimental high-end products rather than default flagships.
Xiaomi’s response is differentiation, not accessibility. It offers a wider closed screen, proprietary silicon, dense multitasking, and a large battery. The company is asking product design to justify a premium position.
That strategy pressures Huawei directly. Huawei must defend its shape leadership and domestic dominance. It also pressures Honor, whose second-place share makes it the nearest volume challenger in China.
For Xiaomi, the forced response is equally clear. It needs reliable supply, strong reviews, and visible adoption after the September 10 release. A brief presale spike will not establish a durable premium franchise.
Xring O3 Turns Hardware Into a Larger Test
The in-house Xring O3 chip makes this xiaomi fold a test of vertical integration, not merely industrial design.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold debuts the Xring O3 processor, according to reports from the company’s launch. The chip uses a 3-nanometer manufacturing process and contains 24 billion transistors.
Its central processor uses ten performance-oriented cores with a reported maximum frequency of 4.35GHz. The package also includes a 16-core G2-Ultra NX graphics processor and a four-core neural processing unit.
A neural processing unit accelerates machine-learning calculations directly on the device. It can support image processing, voice features, and generative tools without sending every operation to a remote server.
Xiaomi’s processor choice gives the company more control over performance, photography, communications, and power management. It also exposes Xiaomi to risks normally carried by established chip suppliers.
Qualcomm has spent years refining application compatibility, modem behavior, graphics drivers, and heat management. Xiaomi must show that Xring O3 can deliver similar consistency inside a thin folding chassis.
The hardware creates a difficult thermal problem. A foldable divides its battery, circuit board, cameras, and cooling system across two thin halves. Heat cannot spread through the structure as easily as it can inside a thick gaming phone.
Xiaomi uses a three-dimensional cooling loop to manage that load. The design sounds substantial, but sustained tests will matter more than peak benchmark scores.
Performance under a short benchmark can differ from performance during video recording, gaming, navigation, or desktop-style multitasking. Independent reviewers should measure heat, throttling, battery drain, and application stability together.
Memory configuration adds another experiment. Most versions use LPDDR5X memory, while the highest-capacity configuration moves to LPDDR6. The distinction creates a natural comparison of efficiency and sustained performance.
Storage uses UFS 4.1, a high-speed flash standard designed for faster application loading and data transfers. The USB port supports USB 3.2 Gen 2, which gives the phone a practical route to external storage and desktop accessories.
Those capabilities serve Xiaomi’s productivity pitch. HyperOS 4 supports as many as six application areas on the inner screen. Users can move between applications with three-finger horizontal gestures.
Xiaomi has also adapted desktop-oriented versions of WPS Office, a video-editing application, and a financial information terminal. These are more credible foldable uses than simply stretching phone applications across a wider panel.
A financial analyst could keep a market feed beside a document and a messaging window. A video editor could review a timeline while retaining access to files and publishing tools.
Still, six visible applications do not guarantee usable multitasking. Text, controls, and touch targets become smaller as more windows share a 7.58-inch screen. Memory management must also keep those applications active.
The company’s assistant interface creates another uncertainty. A contextual feature called the Inspiration Ball will offer voice questions and actions from a side gesture. Xiaomi says it will arrive through a later software update.
That timing matters because the feature is not part of the launch-day experience. Buyers should judge the shipping product separately from functions promised for a future update.
Xiaomi must also maintain its application adaptations. Desktop layouts can break when developers update their software or operating-system interfaces change. Long-term support determines whether the device becomes a genuine work surface.
For knowledge workers, the most credible use is rapid reference rather than laptop replacement. The inner display can place notes beside source material or preserve context during a call.
A personal knowledge workflow can benefit from that extra canvas. The benefit depends on applications respecting the unusual display ratio and retaining state between screen transitions.
The Xring O3 therefore carries more weight than a typical processor upgrade. It must make two displays, multiple applications, imaging hardware, and a large battery operate as one dependable system.
If Xiaomi succeeds, it gains tighter control over its premium roadmap. If software defects or heat problems dominate reviews, the proprietary chip becomes an obvious point of blame.
The Specification Lead Still Hides Practical Risks
Xiaomi’s strongest specifications answer old foldable complaints, but none settles durability, repairability, or daily comfort.
The device carries a 6,000mAh typical-capacity battery, unusually large for a foldable of this weight. Xiaomi reports a rated capacity of 5,875mAh and an energy density of 920 watt-hours per liter.
A silicon-rich battery chemistry helps pack more energy into a limited volume. Xiaomi says the cell uses a stacked structure and contains 20 percent silicon.
Charging reaches 67 watts through a cable and 50 watts wirelessly. Those figures provide flexibility, but real endurance depends on display brightness, modem efficiency, software behavior, and Xring O3 power management.
The camera system also signals premium intent. It includes a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera.
The main camera uses Samsung’s HP5 sensor with optical image stabilization. The telephoto camera offers a reported 3.5-times optical zoom and its own stabilization system.
These specifications give Xiaomi a clear showroom story. Buyers get a large folding display without accepting an obviously secondary camera package. Camera processing remains the unresolved variable.
A new image processor must manage high-resolution sensor data, skin tones, motion, night scenes, and video stabilization. Leica branding cannot substitute for consistent output across those conditions.
The handset supports high-resolution video and Dolby Vision capture across multiple focal lengths. Sustained recording will again test heat management inside the thin body.
Durability poses a broader problem. Xiaomi says laboratory testing covered drops from 1.2 meters. Laboratory claims cannot reproduce every surface, impact angle, contaminant, or pattern of hinge wear.
The IP58 and IP59 ratings are encouraging because dust has historically threatened folding mechanisms. However, neither rating makes the device immune to fine particles or physical damage.
Foldable ownership also involves the inner screen protector, hinge calibration, repair availability, and replacement parts. Xiaomi did not establish those long-term outcomes during its launch presentation.
The body shape adds another practical tradeoff. A wide cover screen should improve reading and reduce cramped layouts. It also changes grip, keyboard reach, case design, and vehicle-mount compatibility.
The 219-gram weight sounds manageable in isolation. Weight distribution matters just as much, especially when one half contains a prominent camera assembly. Extended reading could expose imbalance that a specification sheet cannot show.
Samsung supplies a useful physical comparison. Its Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 5.5-inch cover screen, a 7.6-inch inner screen, and a listed weight of 201 grams.
Samsung’s device uses a more conventional tall form when closed. Xiaomi’s phone presents a wider surface with paper-like proportions. Neither design is universally better because each favors different tasks.
Samsung also benefits from several generations of global carrier support and repair experience. Xiaomi must prove that its form factor and battery advantage can outweigh that operational maturity.
Huawei creates a different comparison. It has experimented with wide, book-style, and tri-fold designs while building a dominant domestic position. Xiaomi is entering a market where novelty already has an established owner.
The risk is not that the 18 Fold lacks distinctive hardware. The risk is that buyers perceive its differences as interesting but unnecessary.
Foldable phones still compete against excellent slab-shaped devices. Those conventional phones generally offer lower weight, simpler cases, mature durability, and more predictable application behavior.
They also avoid a central fold line. Coatings and hinge engineering can reduce crease visibility, but reflections and shallow angles often reveal it. Buyers should inspect the screen under varied lighting.
Another uncertainty concerns international availability. Earlier Xiaomi book-style foldables remained focused on China, while its compact Mix Flip reached more markets. Xiaomi did not establish a broad international release through the initial Chinese announcement.
That limitation affects the competitive meaning of the launch. Samsung may remain largely unchallenged by the device in North America and parts of Europe, even if Xiaomi gains attention in China.
The company’s claims should therefore remain claims until reviewers test them. Brightness, drop resistance, thermal behavior, endurance, and multitasking all require independent validation.
The launch establishes an ambitious package. It does not establish whether the package survives ordinary use better than previous foldables.
Huawei Is the Opponent Xiaomi Must Actually Beat
Xiaomi needs sustained Chinese sales against Huawei, not favorable specification comparisons with every global foldable.
Samsung is an obvious reference because it leads the global Android foldable conversation. Yet Huawei controls the market that matters most for the 18 Fold’s initial release.
IDC placed Huawei at the top of China’s wider smartphone market during the first quarter of 2026. Improved Mate-series supply and the Pura X foldable supported that position.
Huawei’s advantage extends beyond a single successful model. It offers buyers a recognizable foldable identity across multiple designs. HarmonyOS also creates stronger continuity among its phones, tablets, watches, and computers.
Xiaomi has its own connected-device reach, including phones, tablets, appliances, wearables, and vehicles. The 18 Fold can act as a premium control point inside that product universe.
However, ecosystem breadth does not automatically translate into foldable demand. The software must make the inner display useful across communication, documents, entertainment, and device management.
HyperOS 4 is central to that effort. Xiaomi needs applications to transition cleanly between the outer and inner screens. Window layouts should persist without reloading or losing user input.
The six-area multitasking feature gives Xiaomi a visible differentiator. Its real value depends on how often users need more than two or three concurrent applications.
Huawei can respond with software improvements, promotional support, or new hardware shapes. Honor can compete through lighter designs and aggressive updates. Samsung can use global distribution and mature services.
Xiaomi should avoid fighting all three battles equally. Its immediate objective is narrower: turn a distinctive Chinese launch into repeatable demand among premium domestic buyers.
That requires more than a sold-out first batch. Limited supply can make a launch appear successful without revealing broad demand. Shipment volume and continuing retail availability matter more.
The company must also attract users who did not already plan to buy a foldable. Switching existing Xiaomi enthusiasts from one model to another would strengthen product mix without expanding the category.
A more meaningful result would pull customers from Huawei or premium conventional phones. Trade-in patterns and activation data could reveal whether that movement occurs.
Huawei’s dominance also places Xiaomi in an awkward narrative position. Xiaomi can present itself as an alternative innovator, but it cannot credibly describe the market as unclaimed territory.
Its 4 percent first-quarter foldable share gives the company room to grow. It also means percentage gains can look dramatic from a small base.
Independent shipment estimates should therefore accompany any company celebration. Xiaomi’s own presale reservations may include refundable interest, duplicate registrations, or buyers who never activate a device.
The device’s premium position sharpens this requirement. Buyers at the top of the market expect dependable cameras, polished software, good service, and long support.
A single weakness can outweigh several leading specifications. Poor standby drain can erase the value of a large battery. Application instability can undermine the wider screen. Difficult repairs can overwhelm durability claims.
Huawei has already shown that unusual proportions can find a Chinese audience. Xiaomi must show that its interpretation offers a better balance of portability, reading comfort, and software utility.
That is the core contest. It is not simply Xiaomi against Huawei hardware. It is Xiaomi’s promise of a compact digital workspace against Huawei’s existing foldable authority.
Three Signals Will Decide Whether the Bet Works
The next test is adoption, followed by independent hardware validation and a visible response from Huawei.
The first signal is sustained retail demand after September 10. Opening-day shortages provide limited evidence because initial inventory and enthusiast interest can distort results.
Availability several weeks later will offer a clearer view. Xiaomi should disclose shipments or activations rather than reservation totals. Third-party market trackers can then show whether its share moves beyond a small base.
A measurable share gain would strengthen the argument that medium-size book foldables address an overlooked need. Flat performance would suggest that the format mainly shifted demand within Xiaomi’s existing audience.
The second signal is independent testing of the Xring O3 platform and folding hardware. Reviewers should examine sustained speed, thermal throttling, battery life, standby drain, modem reliability, and application compatibility.
They should also test hinge behavior, crease visibility, water exposure, and resistance to everyday debris. Repair specialists can reveal whether the internal layout makes common failures easier or harder to address.
Strong results would support Xiaomi’s vertical-integration strategy. Uneven performance would weaken the product’s premium case, especially where Qualcomm-based rivals provide more predictable behavior.
The promised assistant update provides a related software checkpoint. Xiaomi expects the feature to begin arriving later in September. Its reliability will indicate whether HyperOS can extend the device after launch.
The third signal is Huawei’s product and channel response. Huawei does not need to copy Xiaomi’s exact proportions. It can answer through promotions, software updates, supply expansion, or another foldable design.
A rapid response would confirm that Xiaomi has created pressure inside the Chinese premium market. No visible response could mean Huawei considers the launch too small to threaten its position.
Honor deserves attention as supporting context. Its 21 percent first-quarter foldable share gives it more exposure than Xiaomi. A strong Honor release could limit Xiaomi’s growth before it seriously challenges Huawei.
International availability is another revealing detail within this third signal. A wider release would place the 18 Fold against Samsung’s mature distribution network. A China-only strategy would keep its commercial impact more contained.
IDC expects foldables to grow even while the broader smartphone market contracts. That forecast gives Xiaomi favorable category momentum, but it does not guarantee success for a specific design.
The 18 Fold has a coherent argument. Its wider outer screen supports reading, its inner display supports multiple applications, and its battery addresses a familiar foldable weakness.
The unanswered question is whether buyers experience those benefits often enough to accept the compromises. Width, weight distribution, software adaptation, repairs, and long-term display wear remain part of the exchange.
For prospective buyers, waiting for independent reviews is the practical response. Focus on daily endurance, app continuity, camera consistency, and after-sales coverage rather than isolated benchmark records.
Watch the xiaomi fold after its first retail week, not only during launch night. If demand persists and the hardware holds up, Xiaomi will have found a credible route into China’s premium foldable contest. If either signal fades, the 18 Fold will remain an impressive experiment searching for a larger audience.
