Google launched the Google Gemini Windows app with a familiar shortcut, Alt + Space, already claimed by Microsoft Copilot and other Windows tools. That collision is more revealing than the app’s conventional chat interface. Google wants Gemini to become the assistant users summon before they consider which company built their computer’s operating system.
The new application runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It places Gemini over active work, offering quick questions, content drafting, connected Google services, and a larger workspace for complex tasks. Google announced the release on September 10, 2026, and made it available globally where Gemini is supported.
Microsoft introduced the same shortcut for Copilot’s compact quick view in December 2024. PowerToys Run, Microsoft’s keyboard-driven launcher, also uses Alt + Space by default. The key combination traditionally opens the active window’s system menu, giving the conflict roots that predate both AI assistants.

These details make the application broadly installable, but they do not make it deeply native. Google says more Windows-specific capabilities will arrive over time. Its desktop page currently assigns several richer integrations to the macOS edition, including screen context, cross-application dictation, and local folder connections.
That imbalance defines the initial release. The Google Gemini Windows app brings quick access and account continuity, but its first version does not yet control Windows itself. It is a convenient Gemini client sitting above Microsoft’s platform.

If Gemini detects Copilot or PowerToys and offers a clear choice, Google’s desktop strategy gains credibility.
If users instead encounter inconsistent behavior, the default could weaken adoption among the people most likely to value keyboard access. Reviews should test fresh machines, established PowerToys configurations, Copilot quick view, elevated windows, and full-screen applications.
Second, watch which native capabilities Google ships to Windows. Screen context, controlled local-file access, system-level dictation, and limited cross-application actions would move Gemini beyond a convenient web client. Detailed permission controls must arrive alongside those features.
This signal will strengthen Google’s position if the Windows app reaches functional parity with its richer macOS experience. It will weaken the case if months pass while the application remains mainly an overlay for services already available online.
