Samsung Gallery Google Photos Sync Is Rolling Out, but It Is Not a Full Library Merger

Samsung has begun rolling out Samsung Gallery Google Photos sync, just 12 days before its direct OneDrive integration ends. The change gives eligible Galaxy owners a replacement cloud route without forcing them to abandon Samsung’s native photo app.

The rollout is more consequential than a routine backup update. Samsung is moving Gallery’s integrated storage relationship from Microsoft to Google while preserving Samsung’s interface as the main control point.

However, the new connection does not combine every image stored in Google Photos with Samsung Gallery. It also introduces deletion, editing, account, and feature rules that users should understand before enabling it.

According to the initial sync rollout, Samsung Gallery version 15.9.01.7 appears to activate the option for some users. Availability remains dependent on the device, account, region, and supporting app updates.

That makes this a transition between two cloud systems, not a simple provider swap. Google receives the backed-up media, Samsung retains control of the Gallery experience, and Microsoft remains responsible for previously stored OneDrive files.

What Changed in Samsung Gallery Google Photos Sync

Galaxy owners can now initiate Google-backed photo syncing directly from Samsung Gallery, but the rollout remains staged.

Users with the required updates should see a “Sync photos and videos” option inside Gallery settings. The path starts in Samsung Gallery under Menu, Settings, and then Sync photos and videos.

The setup asks the user to select a personal Google Account and grant Samsung permission to sync media with Google. Once connected, eligible photos and videos are stored in Google Photos under that account.

This differs from the familiar process of installing Google Photos and separately enabling its backup function. Samsung Gallery now acts as the visible starting point and management interface for the connection.

The feature requires a compatible Samsung phone or tablet running Android 13 or later. Google Workspace accounts and supervised accounts are not supported, according to Google’s official sync documentation.

Google also warns that availability varies by account type, device model, and region. Installing the latest Gallery release therefore does not guarantee immediate access.

Reports identify Samsung Gallery 15.9.01.7 as the version associated with the rollout. SamMobile also reports that Gallery Cloud Sync 1.6.09.31 is involved in the connection.

Those version numbers describe the reported launch configuration, not a permanent compatibility rule. Samsung can update either component as deployment expands.

The supporting service matters because Samsung Gallery is not uploading files to an independent Samsung photo repository. Gallery Cloud Sync brokers access between Samsung’s software and storage associated with the user’s Google Account.

Once enabled, users can select individual local albums and device folders for backup. Camera, Screenshots, and Downloads are examples of folders that can be managed separately.

A user can disable camera-roll syncing while continuing to upload another selected folder. That level of control should help people who do not want every photograph entering the same cloud library.

The connection includes more than the image file. Timestamps, locations, favorite status, and some other media metadata can also move through the service.

Backed-up media uses the storage allocation attached to the selected Google Account. Google says Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync uploads files at original quality rather than applying a lower-quality storage mode.

This is also a two-way management connection in several important respects. Deleting a synced item from one service can affect its counterpart in the other service.

That behavior separates the new system from a basic one-directional archive. Users are linking two active interfaces to a shared set of synced items.

The distinction matters because “backup,” “sync,” and “library access” describe different behaviors. Samsung and Google combine elements of all three without creating one completely unified library.

Not everyone needs to enable the feature immediately. People already using the Google Photos app for automatic backup should first check which folders that app currently uploads.

Running overlapping backup paths without reviewing their settings can create confusion about where an image originated. It can also make later storage cleanup harder to interpret.

For users who prefer Samsung’s editing and organization interface, the integration offers a clearer advantage. They can keep Samsung Gallery as their daily app while storing selected media through Google.

That is the central product change. Samsung is preserving its Gallery experience while replacing the cloud destination beneath it.

The Handoff Puts OneDrive Users on a Deadline

The rollout arrives because Samsung’s direct Gallery connection to OneDrive ends on September 30, 2026.

Microsoft announced the cutoff in May and described its consequences in official OneDrive guidance. After the deadline, Samsung Gallery will no longer upload new photos directly to OneDrive.

Cloud media already stored in OneDrive will also disappear from Samsung Gallery’s interface. Microsoft says those files will remain unchanged and accessible through OneDrive’s app and website.

That is an interface separation, not a deletion event. Users should not interpret a missing image inside Gallery as evidence that Microsoft erased the underlying file.

Anyone who wants to remain with OneDrive can enable Camera backup inside the standalone OneDrive app. That route requires the app to have media permissions, sufficient storage, and access to the intended Microsoft account.

However, it will no longer reproduce the former Samsung Gallery integration. Viewing and managing cloud-only OneDrive media will happen through Microsoft’s software.

The new Google connection preserves more of Samsung’s preferred experience. Galaxy owners can start synchronization inside Gallery and view eligible Google-hosted media through Samsung apps on compatible devices.

This timing puts pressure on existing OneDrive users to make a deliberate choice. They can remain with Microsoft through its app, move future uploads to Google, or keep media locally.

They should not assume the new service automatically migrates their OneDrive archive. Neither Google nor Samsung says that enabling the new connection transfers existing OneDrive files into Google Photos.

A migration would require moving or uploading those files through another process. Users with large archives should therefore separate two decisions: preserving old media and selecting a destination for new media.

The distinction is especially important for cloud-only photographs. A file visible through the old Gallery integration might not exist locally on the phone.

If users want that media in Google Photos, they must first establish where the original file resides. They should avoid making bulk deletions while both cloud services are in transition.

Samsung’s own current Gallery instructions still describe OneDrive and Google-backed options in different parts of the device. Documentation can lag behind a staged software rollout, so the phone’s available settings remain the practical test.

The move also changes the competitive balance around Galaxy storage. Microsoft loses its privileged position inside Samsung’s photo application, while Google gains a deeper role on Android’s largest hardware platform.

Yet Samsung has not surrendered the user-facing experience. Gallery remains the place where users browse, edit, organize, and initiate the new connection.

That creates a layered arrangement rather than a simple Google Photos takeover. Google supplies storage and parts of the cloud infrastructure, while Samsung controls how users interact with synced media on Galaxy hardware.

For Microsoft, the pressure is different. OneDrive can still back up a Galaxy camera roll, but it becomes another installed application rather than Gallery’s built-in cloud partner.

For Google, the benefit reaches beyond storage. A native route removes friction for Galaxy owners who like Samsung Gallery but previously avoided Google Photos backup.

Samsung benefits by replacing an expiring integration without building a full consumer photo cloud alone. It also keeps users inside Samsung’s software for everyday media tasks.

The deadline explains why this rollout is happening now. Samsung needs a replacement available before the existing connection disappears from active use.

The limited rollout creates some risk around that schedule. Users who do not receive the required updates before September 30 might face a temporary gap between the old integration and its replacement.

They can still use the standalone Google Photos or OneDrive apps during that period. However, neither option provides the exact same experience as cloud controls embedded in Samsung Gallery.

This Is a Bridge, Not a Merged Photo Library

Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync exposes a controlled subset of Google-hosted media, not a user’s entire Google Photos collection.

Samsung can access media originally uploaded through Gallery Cloud Sync from a synced Samsung device. It cannot browse unrelated items that entered Google Photos through other phones, cameras, uploads, or accounts.

This boundary is one of the rollout’s most important details. Someone with years of Google Photos history should not expect every old image to appear automatically inside Samsung Gallery.

The reverse limitation also matters. Media uploaded through Samsung Gallery is stored in Google Photos, but it does not participate in every Google Photos feature.

Google says these items are excluded from Search, Memories and highlights, and Live albums unless they are also backed up through Google Photos. Basic viewing and sharing remain available.

That creates an unusual middle state. The files live in Google Photos storage, but Google Photos does not treat them exactly like content uploaded through its own backup pipeline.

For some users, that limitation will barely matter. They want off-device protection and access across compatible Samsung hardware, not automated memory collections.

For others, Google Photos search is a central reason to use the service. Being unable to search Gallery-synced images through Google’s normal photo discovery tools weakens the value of the integration.

Users should therefore decide which application they expect to function as their primary library. Samsung Gallery Google Photos sync makes the most sense when Gallery remains the main interface.

It is less compelling when a user wants Google Photos to index, organize, and resurface every uploaded image. That workflow may still require Google Photos backup itself.

The restriction also helps explain why Samsung cannot display the user’s entire Google library. The connection authorizes Samsung to manage a defined body of Samsung-synced media rather than unrestricted account-wide access.

That narrower permission boundary has privacy advantages. Samsung does not automatically gain access to photographs uploaded from unrelated devices or older libraries.

At the same time, users grant Samsung access to selected media, folders, storage-status information, and associated metadata. They should understand that permission before accepting the setup screen.

Turning off the Gallery toggle does not fully revoke the account connection. It stops new backups and removes cloud-media access from Samsung apps, but the linked-app permission remains.

To end future data sharing, users must remove Gallery Cloud Sync from the linked applications section of their Google Account. Previously uploaded files remain in Google Photos after that disconnection.

This division between pausing sync and revoking access is easy to miss. A toggle inside Gallery controls ongoing behavior, while the Google Account page controls the underlying authorization.

The service can also operate as a view-only cloud gallery in a specific configuration. Users can leave Gallery Cloud Sync active while disabling uploads for every local album.

In that state, Samsung Gallery can display eligible media synced from other Samsung devices without uploading files from the current device. It still will not expose unrelated Google Photos content.

This architecture resembles integrations previously introduced by OnePlus, Xiaomi, and OPPO. Those arrangements also placed Google-hosted backup behind a manufacturer’s gallery interface.

Samsung’s adoption matters because of the size and influence of the Galaxy ecosystem. Still, the mechanism follows an existing Android pattern rather than establishing universal gallery interoperability.

The competitive issue is therefore not Samsung Gallery versus Google Photos as mutually exclusive apps. It is Samsung’s interface layered over Google’s storage, with boundaries that protect each product’s separate identity.

That arrangement reduces friction but preserves fragmentation. Users still need to know which application uploaded a file and which service can search, edit, restore, or delete it.

For anyone managing work images, receipts, screenshots, or reference photographs, provenance becomes important. A file that appears in both interfaces does not necessarily have identical behavior in both.

Cloud convenience often hides those distinctions until a user changes devices or cleans up storage. The safest approach is to test the system with a small album before entrusting it with an entire library.

The Deletion and Editing Rules Need Attention

The biggest risk is not failed backup, but a successful sync performing an action the user did not expect.

Google says deletions remain synchronized between Samsung Gallery and Google Photos. Moving an item to the Google Photos trash can also move its Samsung Gallery copies to the trash.

The opposite direction depends on how many local copies exist. Deleting one duplicate in Samsung Gallery does not necessarily remove the Google Photos item, but deleting every copy can remove the cloud version.

Restoring media also crosses the connection. Restoring an item in Google Photos restores its Samsung Gallery copies, while restoring one Samsung copy restores the Google Photos item.

These rules make sense for a synchronized library. They can surprise anyone who thinks Google Photos is functioning as an untouchable backup archive.

Private storage produces another exception. Moving a backed-up image into Samsung’s Private Album permanently deletes its Google Photos cloud copy while bypassing the trash.

Samsung presents a confirmation before that action. Even so, users should read the prompt carefully because the cloud deletion is immediate and does not follow the ordinary recovery path.

Secure Folder behaves differently. Moving an image there relocates the local item, but users may need to delete the cloud copy manually if they want it removed from Google Photos.

That difference means “private” does not describe one consistent cloud behavior across Samsung’s features. Private Album and Secure Folder require separate mental models.

Editing creates its own duplication rules. An edit made in Samsung Gallery updates the image across compatible Samsung devices, but Google Photos stores that edit as a new image.

The Google Photos library can then contain both the original and edited versions. Deleting one does not automatically delete the other because they are separate items.

Samsung preserves the unedited original on the device where the Gallery edit occurred. Users can only revert to that version from the original editing device.

An edit made through Google Photos can also produce additional copies. The exact result depends on whether Google Photos backup is enabled and where the edit occurred.

Edits performed on the web or another device do not automatically overwrite the original stored on the Samsung phone. The user can review out-of-sync changes and decide whether to apply them.

This protects the local original, but it adds complexity. People editing frequently across a phone, tablet, and browser may accumulate visually similar files with different synchronization histories.

Storage-cleanup tools also require care. Google disables “Undo device backup” when Samsung Gallery sync is active or Samsung-synced media remains in the account.

Users who want to remove synced media from Google storage must use Google’s storage-management controls instead. They should verify what those controls select before confirming deletion.

Google Photos’ “Free up space on this device” removes local files that have been backed up. Those images can disappear from local Samsung Gallery albums while remaining in Google Photos.

With Gallery Cloud Sync enabled, eligible cloud media can remain visible in the backed-up device folders. Without it, the user might need Google Photos to see those cloud-only files.

This is why the new feature should not be described as frictionless. Setup is simple, but the lifecycle of a file depends on its source, folder, edit history, and deletion path.

The rollout also leaves several practical uncertainties. Samsung has not provided a universal device list, and early reports show that the option is not appearing everywhere at once.

Workspace exclusion will matter to business users. A managed Google Workspace account cannot serve as the destination, even if the organization already uses Google storage.

Supervised accounts are also excluded. Families managing a child’s device will need another backup path or a qualifying personal account controlled under appropriate policies.

Users should avoid unofficial application packages simply to accelerate access. Waiting for Galaxy Store updates reduces the risk of installing altered software or an incompatible release.

The safest first test uses a noncritical album with a few copied images. Users can verify uploading, editing, deletion, restoration, and cross-device visibility before expanding the selected folders.

That short test can reveal whether the service matches their assumptions. It also provides time to check existing Google Photos and OneDrive settings for overlapping uploads.

What Galaxy Owners Should Watch Next

The success of this transition depends on rollout coverage, feature parity, and how clearly Samsung explains the new boundaries.

The first signal is availability before September 30. Samsung needs to deliver the required Gallery and supporting-service updates broadly enough to prevent a gap for OneDrive users.

A broad rollout before the cutoff would strengthen the case that Google Photos backup is a direct operational replacement. Continued regional or device gaps would weaken that claim.

Users can check Galaxy Store updates and then look for Sync photos and videos in Gallery settings. The absence of that option means the integration is not active on that device yet.

The second signal is whether Google expands feature support for Samsung-uploaded media. Search, Memories, highlights, and Live albums are significant parts of the Google Photos experience.

Adding those capabilities would make the integration feel closer to standard Google Photos backup. Leaving them unavailable would confirm that this remains a storage bridge centered on Samsung Gallery.

The third signal is Samsung’s documentation after the OneDrive cutoff. Users need clear instructions covering migration, account eligibility, cloud-only OneDrive media, deletions, private folders, and duplicate edits.

Updated support pages would reduce the risk of accidental loss during cleanup. Sparse documentation would leave users dependent on scattered help articles and software prompts.

Galaxy owners should also watch their own storage dashboard after enabling the feature. Original-quality uploads consume Google Account storage, which is shared with other supported Google services.

Anyone already near a storage limit should review available capacity before selecting large video folders. A stalled upload can create a false sense that every file is protected.

The immediate decision is not simply whether Google or Microsoft offers the better cloud. It is which application should remain the user’s primary photo interface.

People who prefer Samsung Gallery can gain integrated Google storage while retaining Samsung’s editing and organization tools. They must accept the limited Google Photos feature set and linked deletion behavior.

People who rely on Google Photos search and automated collections may prefer its standard backup route. OneDrive users can remain with Microsoft, but future media will be managed through the OneDrive app.

Before switching, identify where older photos actually live, confirm which folders are already backed up, and test the new connection with copied files. Then choose one primary upload workflow and document that choice across your devices.

Samsung Gallery Google Photos sync solves the urgent problem created by OneDrive’s departure. Whether it becomes a dependable long-term replacement will depend on rollout reach, clearer guidance, and fewer differences between stored media and a full Google Photos library.
