Wan Video Launches Music Companion Dance Feature

Wan Video added a music companion dance tool. Users upload one character and one song. The system then builds a video where the character moves in time with the beat.
The feature supports five dance styles. These include street dance, tap dance, Latin dance, K-Pop, and Chinese classical dance. The tool matches steps to music beats without manual keyframing.
How the Feature Works in Practice
Alibaba Cloud posted the update on X. The post described a simple workflow. Load a character model. Choose a track. The system returns a clip where motion follows the rhythm section by section. Beat detection first identifies rhythmic onsets by analyzing audio waveform peaks; those onsets are then mapped to key poses drawn from pre-trained motion models that encode the five listed dance sequences. No extra editing is required after upload. The output keeps the character consistent across frames. Timing comes from beat detection inside the model.
This release fits inside a broader push by Alibaba to add controllable motion to video generation. Earlier versions handled style and camera moves. The new tool adds timing control tied to audio.
Why This Update Stands Out Against Other Video Tools
Most current AI video systems generate motion from text prompts alone. They rarely lock steps to exact audio beats. Wan Video now offers that lock as a built-in option.
The difference appears in tests with music that has clear drops. The character hits changes at the same moment the music does. Competing tools often drift by a few frames. Limits That Remain After the Update
The tool works only with the listed dance styles. Users cannot request a new style and expect the same beat accuracy. The system also accepts one character per video. Multiple dancers on screen are not supported yet.
Output length stays short. Most generated clips run between ten and twenty seconds. Longer tracks require users to split the song and stitch results later.
The Verge’s hands-on tests found “solid beat alignment on a 15-second street-dance clip” yet noted “occasional foot-slide on complex rigs.” Real user results may vary with character models that differ from the training set. What to Watch in the Next Three Months
Alibaba could release a longer clip option or new dance libraries. Either change would expand the tool beyond short social clips.
Competitors may add similar beat-sync controls. If they do, the gap in timing accuracy will shrink.
User forums and demo shares will show whether the output holds up with varied music genres. Consistent positive examples would strengthen the case for wider use in short form content.
