Sync from Local

This guide will walk you through connecting your local files to remio, unlocking powerful new ways to search, organize, and interact with your local files.

What is Local File Sync?

Local File Sync is so powerful that allows remio to index and understand the files stored on your device. Instead of manually uploading documents, you could simply point remio to the folders you want to sync with minimal effort and maximum privacy.

With Local File Sync, you can search instantly, ask questions about your files, keep your files secure.

How to Set Up

Getting started is easy. You'll just need to grant remio permission to read your files and then choose which folders to sync.

Step 1: Granting Permission

When you first set up the feature, remio will ask for Full Disk Access. This permission is necessary for remio to see and index the files in the folders you choose. Your files remain on your computer and are not uploaded.

Step 2: Adding Folders

  1. Click the [+Add Folder] button & open a Finder window, or use Suggested folders directly, to select a folder you want to sync (e.g., Desktop, Downloads, or a specific project folder)".

  2. You can add multiple folders. remio will begin its initial sync, and you'll see a progress bar for each directory.

Pro Tip: For convenience, remio may suggest syncing your WeChat attachments folder, a common place for important but hard-to-find files.

What Happens After Sync

Find Your Files

  • Once your folders are synced, your can check synced files and folders inside remio in the All view alongside your Notes & Collections.

  • You can use the filters at the top to view only Folders or specific Files like PDFs, Word documents, etc.

Open & Preview Files

  • PDFs: Click to open them directly inside remio's reader.

  • Word (.docx): Click to open a clean, readable version inside remio.

  • PPT (.pptx): Clicking these files will open them in their default application on your Mac (e.g., PowerPoint, Preview).

  • Other format: Not supported yet in current version.

Interacting with Your Files

Just like notes, your synced files can be:

  • Searched instantly: The content of your files is fully searchable.

  • Referenced by AI: When you use Ask remio, the AI can pull information from your documents and cite them as sources.

  • Ask questions about your files: Ask & get answers from your local files such as summaries.

  • Organize with ease: Treat your files like remio notes—add them to Favorites, Collections, or Pin them for quick access.

  • Organized: You can Add to Favorites, Mark as Unprocessed, or Pin a folder or file to the left-hand navigation bar.

  • Keep your files secure: Your files are never uploaded. They stay on your device, and remio only indexes their content locally.

Please Note (Current Version):Sync is currently one-way. Changes you make in Finder (renaming, moving, deleting) will be reflected in remio. However, you cannot yet rename, move, or delete files from within the remio app. This capability is coming in a future update!

Privacy & Security

Your privacy is paramount.

  • Your files stay on your device. Local File Sync does not upload your documents to any cloud server.

  • remio creates a local index of your file content to enable search and AI features. This index is stored securely on your machine.

  • You are always in control of which folders remio has access to.

Q&A

Having an issue? Here are some common solutions.

  • My files are not appearing

    1. Ensure you have granted Full Disk Access in your Mac's System Settings > Privacy & Security.

    2. Go to remio Settings > Local Files and confirm that the correct folder path has been added.

  • Edit document

    • Direct editing documents in remio is not yet supported. To edit a file, simply reveal file in Finder, then open it with its native application.

  • Sync Subfolders

    • Yes, this is the default. remio will sync all folders and subfolders within the selected path. Perfect for structured directories like Documents. And the subfolders cannot and no need to be added individually.

  • Sync folders Combining

    • If a subfolder is currently synced, adding its parent folder will succeed, and the subfolder's sync will then be managed as part of the parent folder's synchronization

Disable & Clean Up

You can stop syncing a folder entirely at any time.

To Stop Syncing a Specific Folder:

  1. Go to Settings > Local Files.

  2. Find the folder path you wish to remove and click the ... menu.

  3. Select Stop syncing.

  4. This will remove the folder from your sync list, and all associated data for its files will be deleted from within remio. Your original files on your Mac will not be affected.

To Completely Disable the Feature:

  1. Follow the steps above to delete all synced folders.

  2. (Optional) Go to your Mac's System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and toggle the permission off for remio.
